Default hotel wifi complications and compromised email account

Please Login to Remove!

Had trouble connecting to hotel wifi on GF's BB curve 8900 at weekend - went through several motions and never managed to get connected but arrived home Monday to find a load of spam bounces in her AOL inbox (registered with BB).

Initially thought this was a simple spoof but the spam has actually gone out to her entire AOL contacts list which suggests that the account had been properly compromised.

While running multiple antivirus scans on her laptop to rule this out I thought it worth posting here to see if anyone can advise.

Is it possible through a bumbled WiFi hotspot set up (I remember at one stage being asked to confirm a certificate and to create a keystore password) to inadvertently provide a hacker access to your AOL account details?

I really hope not and would assume that BB has better idiot proof security but would appreciate confirmation.

Many Thanks, M

Not sure what you did, but I would change the email account password at once.

Sounds like a virus or trojan on the PC however.

Doesn't sound like a BlackBerry problem. Compromised AOL mail is the problem. And the hotel WiFi is never secure.

Thanks for the thoughts guys. I've pretty much eliminated probability of PC infection (came up clean with MBAM & AVG at least) so was looking into the possibility that I had inadvertently compromised security of BB when struggling to connect to hotel wifi.

I guess it is unlikely that in 10 minutes of failed attempts to connect to wifi I revealed AOL account details to an unscrupulous third party - just seemed like a bit of a coincidence (trying to connect Friday and account hacked / spam released Monday) and wanted to rule it out.

Have naturally changed AOL password - not a lot else I can do ...
