I called Verizon, used the *228, they said I was good to go to Brazil.... I land, the time changes, it shows 1x and five bars, but I can't do anything with it! Can't send or recieve, can't use the phone, can't search the internet... have pulled the battery several times.... and still nothing. Called my wife and she was on hold with Verizon for 45 minutes and gave up ..... HELP!!

What is the signal strength? Do you have the international roaming activated?

I've got 5 bars and roaming is on.... thanks for helping... if you can help me get connected, that would be terrific....

You may have to do a secure wipe but only as a last resort. Do you have a data back up?

Are you absolutely sure Verizon activated your SIM card? Did you go into Mobile Network and set the network from 1XEV to either Global or GSM?

Yes, all of the above is correct .... I flew to Germany last month and made sure the phone was ready for global travel. Had a few issues there too, but not like this. And I called them 4 days ago to make sure I was still set up for global travel and they said yes. The blackberry is set on Global and not 1XEV.

Hey Hey!! I set the Mobile Network to GSM and I just got internet service ..... Checking e-mail ...... IT'S WORKING!!!!! (why didn't Verizon tell me that?)

Glad that helped! The 9650 and 9630 are *supposed* to be able to automatically pick up the network when set to Global, but it doesn't always work.

Don't forget to set it back to either Global or 1XEV when you come back to the US.
