Default How on earth do you just send a txt/sms to a new number?

Please Login to Remove!

I know this must surely have been asked already, and but I've wasted 15 minutes already trying to search on popular keywords like sms and txt, entering the stupid verification code, having to go back and so on...

I have a Bold. Honestly...how on earth do you txt a new number without adding them to your contacts list? Here's a step by step narrative of my exprience.

Compose Text Message
Start typing in number at top
Drop down list pops open (with a very user-unfriendly list but thats a side issue)
I have no matches repeated 3 times (is that really necessary?)
Phone: 07
Email: 07
Lookup: oz

But no sms option!

Seriosuly guys what's going on with the design of the BB OS? I used to be a massive fan, and now I can't wait to get off Blackberry and move to an Iphone! Please make it easy to use, pretty please!

Just completely enter the number to which you wish to send the SMS.

No I've tried that - I simply get the option to Phone or Email the number.

No I don't. In fact I've never seen "Use once" the whole time I used the phone..! This is not good....

1. Back up your data through Desktop Manager.
2. Call Verizon and have them walk you through re-programming your phone.
3. Restore your data from the back up file.

Verizon needs to add it to your plan

To send and receive SMS text messages, your wireless service provider must set up your wireless service plan for SMS text messaging. Depending
on your wireless service provider, this feature might not be supported.

You can forward SMS text messages as PIN messages or email messages. If your BlackBerry® device is connected to a CDMA network, you can
also send an SMS text message to an email address.
If you have more than one phone number associated with your device, your device sends SMS text messages using the first phone number that
appears in the drop-down list beside the My Number field at the top of the screen in the phone application.
Depending on the typing input language that you are using to type your SMS text messages, your messages might display to your recipients
differently than you expect.
Send an SMS text message
You can send an SMS text message to up to ten recipients. Depending on your theme, a separate icon on the Home screen might appear for
SMS text messages and MMS messages.
1. On the Home screen, click the Messages icon.
2. Press the Menu key.
3. Click Compose SMS Text.
4. In the To field, perform one of the following actions:
• Type a contact name.
• Press the Menu key. Click Choose Contact. Click a contact.
• Type a phone number that can receive SMS text messages (include the country code and area code).
• If your device is connected to a CDMA network, you can type an email address.
5. Click OK.
6. Type a message.
7. Press the Enter key.

Whoa this all sounds rather serious. To be clear, I can send text messages to people provided they are in my contacts list. Do I really have to do all this stuff just to send a text message to someone that is not on my contacts list on a blackberry?

I wonder if you have an IT Policy on your BlackBerry that restricts your use of text messaging.

Options > Status
Type "buyr" (no quotes)
Three new lines appear on the Status screen: Data Usage, Voice Usage, and IT Policy.
IT Policy should show "Disabled" if you do not have one on your device.

You can also take a gander at your Firewall settings via Options > Security Options > Firewall. See if your Firewall is enabled and if SMS is checked.

I coulnd't find Status when I went to options. I have Blackberry 9650, 6.0 bundle 1741 (v6.0.0.431, Platform 4.4.0.315). It is connected to a BES.

Ok, so do the following.

Go into your SMS icon and press the Menu Key, select Compose Text Message
Type the full number you want to text
You will see your list
Select Phone from the list

This should allow you to send the text. Remember that you're in the compose screen, so you're not going to call the number. You're either going to compose an SMS or email depending on which you select. Since phones receive SMS, you want to select the Phone option.

Thanks! That works. Jeez, who on earth decided that it would be a clever idea to call it "phone" rather than "SMS" or "Txt". I'm only ranting here in the hope that the folks at Blackberry read this and think hard about the user interface as there are a number of bad design features of the phone.

BlackBerrys have a unique way of doing some things. It all makes sense when you stand back and look at it all from a distance Kind of a "soft focus" thing like with those hidden image posters.
