I left corporate life, gave back my Curve, and was left with my ex-corporate Win 7 PC. Bought a 7100G, downloaded the Desktop Software, and discovered how helpless I am without my IT team!

The 7100G, when plugged in, announces "Connected to desktop" and shows a picture of two devices moving data. It then changes to "connecting to desktop" and stays locked in that mode, even if I disconnect from the PC. The only way out is to pull the battery from the phone.

Meanwhile, the Desktop Software says "backing up don't disconnect", and eventually changes to "There was an error on backing up".

HEEEELP! (preferably in simple English)

I'm not completely sure on the reason why it changes to connecting to desktop and seems stuck on that. But make sure and not use a hub, keyboard USB port, monitor port, etc. Use a USB port on the computer. And make sure the computer is not shutting down the port to save power.

Thanks for the suggestion. I was using a USB port on the PC, and I have not got the PC in power save mode.

How long did you leave it before disconnecting? I would leave it 15 minutes or so to be sure.

From there it is going to be a process of elimination. Is it the USB connector on the handset? USB on computer? Corruption of the BlackBerry desktop software? Corruption of the handset software? Some other problem with the handset? USB cable?

If you have access to another computer, I would try the handset on it. Make sure the handset battery is charged. See what happens. If you have no trouble with the other computer, that would rule out the handset and cable.

If you have access to another cable, you may want to try that.

If you have the trouble on a second computer, even with another cable, you can try wiping the handset and reinstalling the device software (i.e. the OS). See blackberry.faq and the two articles on JL_CMDER for help on wiping the device. If you are able to wipe and reinstall the OS, the device should be good.

All said, I am suspecting the USB connector on the device. Does the device charge when you connect it to the computer? Is the USB plug overly loose when connected to the device?

Make sure that you have a data cable or a data/power combo. If it is a power cable the device will not be recognized.

You might also try an older version of Desktop Manager. The 7100G is an older model and unfortunately these legacy devices don't always function properly with the newest versions of Desktop Manager.

I believe version 4.0 or 4.2 was the standard for your model, but give 4.6 a try. It's the oldest one on the list.
