Default Blackberry 8700c Dreaded Flashing red light

Please Login to Remove!

Well looks like the end of the road for my 8700c

Got the red flashing light of death.

Only comes on when i plug in the usb cable to charge and only for about 5 seconds then it goes out.

Tried the usual removing the battery left it for an hour or so and stuck it back in - nada.

Tried new battery.

Tried Apploader and JL commander but can't connect as I'm getting the "Usb device not recognised" every few minutes whilst the computer tries to identify the Blackberry!

Cant even get to the USB-PIN:UNKNOWN stage so at a loss as to whether it is permanently nuked or just stuck in a power diagnostics loop.

The screen is dead but displays the power dead/battery symbol once in a while which leads me to think that it isnt completely dead and may just be a faulty usb port but without the ability to charge the battery as i dont have a standalone charger unable to proceed.

Any other ideas?

Was the new battery an OEM model made for the 8700C?

No it was a cheapo from Hong Kong but i've tried a new battery from our spares cupboard at work sup3p3lied by Rim and its the same.

I have borrowed a mains charger will try that next but sure its the usb socket!

I think it may be a case of pulling the usb cable without stopping the port which although microsoft says cant damage the usb device anymore i am doubtful - you should really always eject the device but sometimes being lazy doesnt help!

The blackberry if plugged into the AC USB charger when pulled does not cause any issues so I doubt the Data cable connected to the PC would cause any issues. You may be correct in that the connector is defective.

Blackberry must be buffered then i guess im clutching at straws but for sure you can still damage usb peripherals by yanking them from the usb port - i saw a user do it with a cheap memory stick last week!

Tried a charger and same problem - red light steady for about 10 seconds - goes out and nothing but black screen.

When the battery is pulled and the charger is attached i do get a battery with the usual lightining sign so the screen is ok and there is some life left there somewhere?

Next step unless someone has a better suggestion is to open it up and attempt an electrical trace fault find and repair?

Tried a charged battery from another phone.
Blackberry boots fine.

Problem is the usb port isnt charging the battery.

Might be useful for anyone else searching for the same issue.

Only solution would be to resolder / diagnose the usb port or buy a cradle charger for the battery,

Thanks for the input anyway!

I have learned something - battery icon with lightining sign next to it means the battery isnt charging - usually due to a faulty usb port!
