SOS indicates you have no service in the area. The delay may be also your area. If you do not have full bars or at least most of them you may be in a bad area. Calls and emails will be affected. Try to see if your carrier has a web site and shows their coverage in your home area. Bad coverage ? It may be time to see if others have the same problem and if so a carrier change may help . If others do not have the problem it may be your phone has problems. Generally apps added wont cause reception issues unless you have no free memory and the phone cannot process the required function.

my wife and i have the same 8520 and hers is on EDGE plus a full bar so the coverage is fine, i can clearly say its the phone but the again am not sure if the os can affect how the antenna works, please if anyone can help me do so please, thanks

One full bar doesn't necessarily mean you will be on EDGE. There are other factors to take into account.

In some cases, a battery pull can fix the problem if it is a device issue. If it doesn't then a call to the carrier is in order to check tower and service status.

Just saying it is the OS or the phone itself without any troubleshooting won't help actually find the issue.

The cell phone radio is subject to variable reception levels. Not all will show the exact same in all circumstances. It is possible the radio on one is not tuned properly or is not operating at optimal levels.
As suggested, a call to the carrier may help but you will need to get above the first level support people to get this type of help.
