Update Bricked my Bold

Now 27 hrs into the update that 'may take an hour.'

Yesterday (2011.08.07) started BlackBerry Desktop to get a file back from a backup. Seemed simple enough. Oh look - a new version of Desktop (6.1). Got that. Oh look - a new device update do I want that? Sure!

But wait - Desktop needs ANOTHER update before it can actually update my device. Got THAT. Started device update AGAIN.

Hangs at "net_rim_bb_phone_resource.cod." After 4 hrs of that, tried all manner of soft resets, hard resets, reboots, re-downloading software - NOTHING HELPED.

This morning decided to re-install my previous device package. STILL HANGS AT "net_rim_bb_phone_resource.cod."

I'm travelling in 3 days and I really need a phone, not a lovely paper weight.

There was not much in my "vendor.xml" file but I deleted (renamed, actually) it anyway, per one of the FAQ's. Disabled "AutoUpdate" everything.

Tried to search for solutions specific to "net_rim_bb_phone_resource.cod" but that's too long for the search function to handle.

So now I'm stuck and NOT HAPPY.

Appreciate any practical assistance available. Thanks in advance.

Wipe the device with Jl_cmdr (see the FAQ for 2 articles) then reload your OS. Hopefully you have a backup of all your data and apps. Otherwise they are gone.

Once you get the OS reloaded, re-sync and restore from the back up. The re-register via host routing table and do a battery pull.

You could also try BBSAK and see if that will help you fix it.

I expect to lose some data but the rest should be backed up. I'll look in the FAQs for this - thanks.

'via the host routing table'
I thought I knew what a host routing table was but I'm not familiar in this context. 'splain, please.

I don't know this initialism either, sorry. New to this forum... Thanks in advance for the additional information.

How is it that Blackberry updates are so problematic? (Rhetorical question...)

BBSAK is "BlackBerry Swiss Army Knife", a multi-purpose utility program.
BlackBerry Swiss Army Knife

Host Routing Table: Once your OS is reloaded properly, Go to Options > Device > Advanced System Settings > Host Routing Table. From there you can use the Menu key to select Register Now. You should get an email message from your carrier when it happens.

Re: Update Bricked my Bold

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.
However - NOTHING worked.
Got BBSAK - nice tool.
Tried every permutation of Load OS / pull battery / Wipe Device available.
Still hangs in the same place - this with the OS Image I got from the official BlackBerry / AT&T page.

Tried all that 'start from scratch' stuff with the 'downrev' OS image (what I was running happily with before). SAME thing.

Off for some quality time with the AT&T store this afternoon - we'll see what they have to say...

Re: Update Bricked my Bold

AT&T basically said 'The 9700 is too old for us to care.'
They made me a good deal on a 9800 and _promised_ (we will see...) that I can swap over to a 9810 as soon as they are released.

Now I can't move my email, but that is a separate issue.

Bottom line: The update killed my phone, just in time for the only available BlackBerry upgrade (9800) to be sunsetted...
