Default BlackBerry 9700 Hanging while connected via wifi

Please Login to Remove!

Hi everyone,

I've developed quite a problem for the last 6 months or so.

I have a BB 9700 (running platform 5.1.0.175).

Daily (sometimes many times a day) - it just freezes. Will freeze when disconnecting from a phone call - or will freeze when I try to go into messages app.

Many errors with 'app not responding' for messaging and phone.

I've tried pretty much everything to diagnose.

Have reinstalled OS and all apps. Have removed ALL 3rd party apps for a few weeks. I even switched hardware (swapped my personal 9700 with my work 9700) - the problem followed my 'personal' configuration to the new hardware!

I literally couldn't get past a day without it hanging. After rebooting - I couldn't get into messaging for 10 minutes maybe - if I'm lucky. Sometimes multiple battery pulls are needed.

When in this hanging weird mode - if I power off - power on - I get an Error 523.

I finally stumbled across what's causing it. The problem totally goes away if I turn off the wifi connection. (by the way I wasn't using UMA - just WIFI data connection)

While is A solution - I was previously using BlackBerry Podcasts - and I want to use wifi to download podcasts.

Without wifi - I'm stable for days and days.

Unfortunately - if I turn on wifi to download podcasts - it starts hanging again.

Has anyone else seen this type of behaviour?

thanks,

PHT

I never saw this with my 9700. Also, I used wifi a great deal everyday, leaving wifi enabled all the time.

What is strange is seeing this on two different 9700s. That would seem to rule out a hardware problem with the device itself.

Just for giggles, how about removing the microSD card -- assuming you are using one -- and turning wifi back on, and seeing what happens over next 24 hours.

EDIT: An afterthought...Is this when wifi is enabled whether you are connected to wifi or not? Only when connected? Connected to any router or hotspot, or just one?

I found something similar after upgrading one of my 9700's to 6.0 version 2342. Rignt now when ever I'm in range of my WIFI it hangs. I have not seen the 523 error but my suspicion is one of the Apps is conflicting with the upgrade. Also the battery is draining in about 6 hours. This I'm attributing to the location services running the GPS constantly as apposed to only when on with the 5 version or lower.
Sadly I don't think RIM is checking the upgrades against available apps.

Thank you for the replies.

This happens after the wifi has ben connected for a while (can be 2 minutes or 2 hours). (I've tried connecting to both an apple airport and a linksys wifi access point - to eliminate a specific problem with a certain access point).

I should point out - I don't have a single program added (very boring blackberry!)

Update
I discovered ( i hope) my issue was with an App called POYNT. For some reason it was causing my problems with stalling and battery drain. I suspect it was constantly using the GPS and when inside it would attempt to do something with the WIFI to find a location it would stall the BB. This may not be your issue but you did indicate one app installed. Maybe its worth a try to delete it. I did search on the internet and found nothing that would indicate POYNT would cause this type of issue. I understand the GPS use but not the WIFI. Maybe it's a coincidence.

thanks tsac.

I'm still running with a vanilla setup since the last reload - so no apps whatsoever installed any more except apps from BlackBerry.

ok so if you have a stock BB and are still getting this problem then either the basic OS is corrupted or you have a hardware issue. The WIFI portion of the BB operates apart from the Cell radio.

you can try a wipe then reload the OS using JL_Cmdr or BB Swiss Army knife programs. IF you just reloaded the OS it might be that the WIFI function was not replaced.
At this point it's worth a try.

thanks.

It's certainly a mystery.

Especially since it followed the setup/BIS from one BB to another.
