I bought from Ebay a Blackberry 7290 Pro. It came with no instructions which didn't help when to my frustration the phone would not switch on.

I eventually located a user guide that I was able to download as a PDF file for free which showed me where the power on button was - button to the right of the CAP key which looks like a sun.

I have pressed this button quickly and held it down for varying amounts of time and it just will not switch on.

I believe the way to reset the phone is to remove the battery and reinsert, this I have done several times, no luck.

The person who sold it to me assured me it worked last time he used it.

Can anyone help me as I just don't know what to do now to get the phone to power on.

I have also downloaded and tried to access it using Blackberry Desktop Software, which tells me cannot connect phone, calls it an unknown device, says to check my usb connection (this is fine), says battery might be dead, I have 2 batteries one came with phone and a brand new one, which has been on charge all night so battery cannot be dead, I tried to update it using BDS no joy, asked me for password, as I had no idea what it was, I tried the 10 attempts all of which were incorrect and it said it would now wipe the phone, it still won't connect to BDS. Arggghhhhhhhhhhh. I only want to turn on the phone, why is this proving impossible?

But I must ask the obvious question. Have you charged the battery for a few hours?

When was the last time it was used? If it has been sitting around with the battery dead and still in the device, you might need a new battery. But given the age of the device, I agree with the above, get your money back.

There are OEM batteries (avoid generic junk) on eBay for under $10 if you simply must keep the device.

But when an old piece of tech doesn't work, generally you bin it. The last time the previous owner used it he says it worked. But when was the last time he used it? 2005?

NJBlackberry and dc/dc - I have got my money back already, but the seller didn't give me their name and address to send it back, so I still have the phone, just would really like to get it to work if possible.

Dubdub - yes I have charged the battery overnight (5pm - 8am) and nothing. I have done this with the battery the seller sent with the phone and also a brand new battery that I bought for it, so it's not the battery.

rambo47 - no idea when the seller last used it, have asked and seem to no longer be able to get a reply from him, oh well, got my money back thats the main thing, just wish there was a way to get it to work, just seem to be thwarted everyway I try because BB Desktop Software won't recognise that it is USB connected to PC and says unrecognised device. Why would this be when the computer recognises it and installs the drivers?
