SOS means that there is no cellular service. If the SIM card is inserted, it works, and it's the right SIM card, then I would call the carrier to find out why her phone shows no coverage. According to RIM, here are the reasons for SOS:
  • The Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card is not properly inserted into the BlackBerry smartphone.
  • The service has been disconnected by the wireless service provider.
  • The network selection mode is set to manual and no network is selected.
  • The network does not support roaming. (GSM Based)
  • The BlackBerry smartphone is not set for Global mode when roaming (CDMA WorldPhone)
  • The BlackBerry smartphone is set to Global mode and there is no SIM card inserted (CDMA WorldPhone)
  • The SIM card is scratched or damaged.
  • The SIM card contacts are oxidized.
  • The BlackBerry smartphone requires the latest software from the wireless service provider.

First, with the device on, remove the battery for 30 - 60 seconds, reinsert and let the device reboot? Does that fix it? If not go to # 2.

Second, click on "Manage Connections" icon, make sure that "Mobile Network is checked and shows your carrier. You can also check WiFi and Bluetooth if those are used. Does that work? If not, then go to 3.

Third, go to "Options" > "Host Routing Table" > Menu (Blackberry button) > "Register Now". This will re-register the device with the carrier and resend the service books.

If that doesn't work, call your carrier's tech support.
