I accepted a BB contact by mistake then realised I didn't know the person so deleted the contact whilst she was in the middle of sending a BB message. Now I have a new message icon on my homescreen and have tried everything to delete it! !

Try a battery pull.

or soft reset Alt+Shift+Del, that should get rid of the BBM notification.
