Now the phone keypad lights up but phone is still dead
I think i might have a Blackberry Bold 9700 how do you tell them apart is it possible i might be trying to put the wrong os system on?

Take the battery cover off and remove the battery. Look and see if there is a label with the model number printed on it along with PIN, etc. I don't remember for sure what is there on the 9700.

Edit

Aparently RIM does use other countries to make BB's so you may have to insure the OS is compatible.

Use JL_CMDER or BBSAK to wipe the handset. See blackberryfaq.com.

Troubleshoot problem connecting to device. There is a sticky thread here on the forum and a knowlege base article at blackberry.com.

If you have run down all the possible connection issues and still can't get it, try using a different computer.

Here is the KB article I had in mind: KB04269-Unable to connect to the BlackBerry smartphone during a multistage loading operation 0 85624172

Most of the time you will find answers by searching on the exact error message.

Did you figure out what model you have, and that it is a genuine BlackBerry?
