I do not have my (nor my son's) Blackberry set up as I should because I've only been using it to make phone calls. Don't even ask me what he uses his for because, as it stands, I don't even see him talking on it. I got mine from a friend who needed a larger screen size and my son got his from a friend who sells his old phones to other classmates in their school. Of course, both phones need to be backed up, luckily I have two laptops so they won't be backed up on the same computer. So first and I need a good backup app.

Then my son who thinks having a phone gives him the unquestionable right to leave the house and basically come and go as he pleases, I would like some kind of GPS installed on his phone as well as mine. My reason for me is so I'm nor somewhere I'm not familiar and get lost.

Can anyone help me or make some suggestions on what I need?

First of all. for backup, you need to install Blackberry Desktop Manager. Go to the RIm site and download version 6 on each laptop. that will allow you to make backups of data - i.e. contacts, calendar, etc.

As for GPS, we first need to know the model number of each device, not the nickname. Not all BBs have GPS. If the device doesn't have GPS, you are probably out of luck.

Second, you will need to have a BB data plan activated on your account since maps are downloaded as needed, not stored on the device itself. I must be a BB data plan, an ordinary data plan will not work.

As for apps, check out our GPS and Mapping section to see if there is something that will work for your son. For you, BBMaps or GoogleMaps will probably work OK. But you will need the extra BB data plan added on.

Also some carriers offer tracking as a service.

Cool, I ask Boost if they do that.
