First, about water, it doesn't take much to cause keypad and button problems, and the indicators still be negative.
Odds are your device is damaged or worn out. You can be sure if you reload the OS. That would resolve any software issues. If you loaded new software or a theme, you could try deleting that first. But if you rule out software, you're left with hardware.
My expectation is you'll find it's time for a new device.
