Default CDMA Storm Internet service suddenly stopped working in South Africa

Please Login to Remove!

I have been using an ex Verizon 9530 Storm in South Africa for nearly 8 months. I purchased on bid-or buy here (equivaleny of ebay in SA) and the internet service has been working ok. A week ago the EDGE sign suddenly went to edge and I have searched far and wide for an answer..! THe vodacom technical people told me CDMA phones cannot work here and are only meant for US. Am not satisfied with that answer because I have been using it with no probs! If that is the case with CDMA then a lot of people are being conned here into buying these ex verizon phones! What do I do...?
What I have tried so far:
1. Options/advanced options/host routing table/ register now/re-boot.
2.Options/mobile network/ data services off, then on /re-boot.
3.Options/mobile network/ manually select mobile network /re-boot.
4.Ran diagnostics and got ; ICMP Ping Echo: YEs
Blackberry registration:No
Connected to Blackberry: Abort

It should work fine as long as Vodacom has the service books (which they apparently do if it worked for 8 months) as the 9530 has a GSM radio, but it definitely isn't the recommended way.

Now are you sure that your BlackBerry data plan is active?

Thanks for reply,
Yes my data plan is active...they even sent me an sms reminding me that it expires end of month!
It occassionally goes to EDGE whenever I reboot, I even succeeded in opening google maps after which it promptly went back to edge! What else could be wrong?

Have you tried re-sending service books?

Yes I have tried....I have new info though, After many phonecalls to vodacom each averaging an agonizing 30 mins of convincing them I had done everything they asked me to. I finally got them to officially tell me (and the helpdesk technician actually did), that vodacom has switched off all blackberry service to storm 9530s with CDMA..., this includes all other blackberrys with CDMA....ouch . What a way to deal with a loyal customer, without notice, plus my there is still money on my data plan! Am sure lots of people have been affected and they dont even know whats going on. It was my persistence and slight technical knowhow that led me to contact vodacom the way I did and to get the info.
A lot of people will still getting conned when they are sold these phones here..am sure. My vendor went quiet when I contacted him.
So in effect, I have 'nuked ' berry which was expensive for me as am a student!

Interesting, but not surprising. It makes it much for difficult for GSM providers to support devices that were originally CDMA. If money is an issue but you like the touchscreen, go for a Curve 9380.

Thanks! What puzzles me though is that if I continue having the service even on my CDMA phone, that is a direct income for the provider/s. Am thinking I should just stick with a basic phone that allows me calls/basic internet access when I need it, b/berry smart phones are currently beyond my pocket. If I do go for one at some point perhaps you'd be kind enough to advise me if I ask ...cheers!

The engineering effort required is not worth the money for most carriers...

Definitely look at the 9380.

Have you been able to ascertain if it is only Vodacom that has taken this action. Will the phone work on the other networks? I am in a similar situation.

As far as I know so far, there is no absolute guarantee that it will work on any of the networks, it may work for some time and even be intermittent sometimes. As dc/dc mentioned in one of the replies to my post, I quote "The engineering effort required is not worth the money for most carriers..." . Mine now seems to work ok on a different network...I contacted them first and asked if they support CDMA and thankfully they replied in the affirmative so I went ahead and subscribed..Good luck!
