Default Green call/bb button and back/red hangup button are connected (9800)

I have a 9800 Torch, and a few days ago, this started happening:

I can't press the blackberry button without also pressing the green call button. It makes it pretty much impossible to access the menu in an app that doesn't allow you to simply hold down the center button to click 'full menu'.

I also can't click the back button without also pressing the red hangup button, which makes going backwards through menus a very tedious exercise of pressing back, being thrown to the home screen, switching back to the app, and pressing back again...

I've tried taking all the plastic layers off the top of the buttons to expose the actual metal contacts that need to be shorted to trigger the button. I short the metal contacts of the BB button with a dull screwdriver without touching the contacts of the green call button, and STILL they are both activated.

So either there is a short somewhere along the thin orange pad that connects the contacts to the motherboard, or this is a software issue.

Any ideas what I can do?

Did the Blackberry get dropped or wet?
I doubt it is software.

I presume you have taken the battery out..

Oh probably, it's pretty old, at least 5 years I think? Was given to me second hand. It's been dropped a few thousand times, and while it hasn't been submerged as far as I know, it has been in the pockets of rain-soaked pants.

Yes, I've taken the battery out and restarted it many times. I do have about 10 years experience with electronics as a hobby, do you think there is any chance of this being repaired?
