There has been or was some bug with Yahoo and/or Microsoft messenger app that interfered with the native address book app. Search if you want to find the details. But if you have these apps, try deleting them and test.
Another possibility is the address book database is corrupt. If so, deleting the database and then restoring from backup or re-sync'ing should correct the problem. Use the desktop software to selectively delete the database. If you restore, use the desktop software to selectively restore the address book.
