Question Problem with Wifi connection

Please Login to Remove!

I have a BB 9900 and I am a new BB user. I am unable to browse the internet using Wifi network. The message displayed is "Data Services are disabled. Go to Mobile network to enable". This means I have to switch on Data services from my service provider and hence I have to pay for the additional bytes used. Why can't I browse with the Wifi directly? Is there any modifications to be done on the device to enable browsing with wifi without switching on data services?
I would appreciate some feedback on how to solve this problem.
Thanks.

Do you have a BlackBerry Data Plan from your service provider?

You will need the proper data plan to be active in order to use data features such as browsing the internet even over WiFi.

Once you have the proper data plan and have the data turned on on the device, it will use WiFi (and not charge to your data allowance).

Thanks MM. I have what is called a BIS Lite plan from the service provider. I am not sure what are limitations of this plan, but I only get 1GB of usage per month and its a basic plan. So you can understand that any over-usage will result in additional charges. That s why I am interested in a WiFi connectivity. Is there anyway I can ascertain whether my internet usage is drawn from the WiFi network or from the data plan of my service provider, when both of them are turned on? As I have mentioned, I cannot browse the internet with WiFi alone turned on. I need to turn on the Data Services too to browse.

You could leave the Data Services ON and turn the Mobile Network OFF to ensure that you aren't using the network (but you won't be able to make and receive phone calls).

But if you are connected to WiFi, the browser will use that by default even if the Mobile Network is ON.

And 1GB of data should be plenty for normal use. Unless you are constantly streaming music or video over the carrier network, you should not get anywhere close to that level of usage on a BlackBerry.

You also can install a monitoring application to check the amount of data you are using.
