Default Require Recent BES to BIS Info

Please Login to Remove!

I have been searching for up-to-date advice on how to change from BES to BIS. The only information I can find is all 5 or 6 years old and relates to Desktop Manager v5 or earlier. KB03179 is out-of-date and is no help. Likewise KB23669.

I have a Bold 9700 running OS 6.0.0.706 and Desktop Manager 7.1
My device was originally a BES device but I got my carrier to change it to BIS. After a failed OS upgrade the device would no longer boot so I had to reset to factory settings, so now I am back to BES format. Hence, no email. A restore restored everything except the BIS settings.

Does anyone have up-to-date information on BES to BIS conversion?

You need to look at the FAQ section on top of the page.

Remove IT policy
Make sure the device has been released by the company off the bES.
Until you do this it will keep the locks on the BB.

Thank you tsac. I tried both Method #1 and Method #2. They succeeded in removing IT Policy from my BB, but it still will not allow me to set up BIS email. The device stubbornly insists that it is a BES device. Very frustrating!

When you say that the "device stubbornly insists that it is a BES device" what exactly is happening?

What you are you seeing?

Do you have an active BlackBerry Data Plan with your service provider? Is the device active on the carrier's BIS?

Don't you have to do a wipe/reinstall to get rid of the BES settings and start with BIS?

Thanks to tsac, Motorcycle Mama and Rambo47 for your help.
Here's what I'm seeing in my BB9700:
1. In "Set-uo" there is no icon to set up email. I have icons for BlackBerry Messenger, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
2. I have an active mobile network connection (Telstra) and an active wi-fi connection.
3. Options > Security > Security Status Information = * No Services *
4. Options > Device > Advanced System Settings > TCP IP > APN = telstra.internet
5. Options > Device > Advanced System Settings > Service Book - There are no "Desktop" service books.
6. Messages > Menu > Options - There is no option for "Email Account Management"
7. I have a BlackBerry Data Plan with Telstra and until recently was receiving BIS emails. These ceased when I had to perform a device wipe in order to recover from a failed attempt to upgrade to OS 6.0.0.723
8. Telstra have recently decommissioned their BlackBerry Help Desk, so can't get much help from them. I am trying to get a password for telstra.blackberry.com - If I follow the Create path, I am told that I already have an account, but I don't know the password and Telstra did not know how to reset it.
9. When connected to BlackBerry Desktop Software v7.1, I see a dialogue facilitating setup of enterprise email, but nothing to do with BlackBerry Internet Service.
10. I can send & receive SMS messages but not email.

It sounds like your device is not active on their BIS. It doesn't sound like it has anything to do with a BES.

From my experience, once the IT policy is gone and the OS reloaded or wiped it is on BES service provided the OP has a BB data plan. when doing a DM setup BIS is always available but can be ignored.
As for the password issue with the BIS site, i'm not sure anyone except the carrier can deal with that. I dont think RIM manages the carriers BIS servers.
