I am trying to back up my 9810 through Decktop Manger but fail; all I get is "BlackBerry® Desktop Software failed to backup your BlackBerry® device. The device was disconnected."
Any reson why?

Check the port you are using on the PC. Some are hub ports and wont connect to the cell phone. Check options on the DM and insure your set up for USB. It can cause all kinds of issues including yours.
You did not indicate the OS level on the PC but this link may help.
