The camera on my BB Bold has recently "blacked out"

The flashlight/camera flash no longer works, as well
and when I try to load up the camera to take photos,
this is what I see:

I have tried hard resetting, closing all misc. apps, updating all apps, adjusting camera settings (i.e. autofocus OFF, portrait mode, etc. etc.) and nothing seems to be working.

Is it safe to say I need a new camera/phone?

An app itself could be interfering with the camera app. Have you installed anything recently?

No. Nothing as of late.
I do have a flashlight app that turns the camera light into a flashlight
but I use it on a daily basis for half a year now. That, too, is being affected.
No camera. No flashlight :(

What happened right before this started being an issue. Did the device get dropped? Did it come in contact with moisture?

Unfortunately nothing like that.
I can't pinpoint any kinda trauma or mishap whatsoever.

I remember using it the night before
to light my way into the kitchen
after coming home from work late
and then forgetting to charge the battery.

So at work the next day, when I was
trying to take a photo, it showed up black.
I thought it was just a low-battery issue.

It hasn't worked at all since then.

It could be a corrupt software installation.

You may want to back it up, wipe the device out with BBSAK or JL_CMDER and reinstall the latest Operating System.
