Bold 9700 Wi-Fi problem

Alright, so I have searched high and low for a fix for this, but nothing has proved mildly useful. About two days ago, my phone's wi-fi stopped working completely. I initially assumed it was the wi-fi at my own house, but it is completely non-operational regardless of where I may go, including my friend's house, and the college I attend. The phone is connected to the respective network at all of these locations, but it refuses to work. I cannot use the Internet browser, my internet radio app, wi-fi calling, or any other features one might require internet usage for. And no, I do not have or need a data plan.

surprise surprise ! the carrier found your blackberry and deleted the service books that control the functions.

A common issue with blackberrys that do not have a specific blackberry data plan from most carriers.

I hope that was a joke, dude. If not, that's bloody awful.

BlackBerry devices have very limited use without a BlackBerry data plan. What you describe is to be expected.

Not a joke at all.
BlackBerrys without a BlackBerry Data Plan are very limited.

Well, last I checked, you didn't need a data plan to use wi-fi in your own house. Or is that some crooked loophole they use to get you?

You do with a BlackBerry.

Service books are required in order to use Wifi (among many other things), which only come with a BlackBerry data plan. How to Get a BlackBerry Service Book

You were misinformed.
Crooked? No. That's the way they have always worked.

Re: Bold 9700 Wi-Fi problem

Just FYI, I encountered the following with another user, on T-Mobile.

This person is using a 9700 without a data plan and happily using wifi. As many or most know, T-Mobile is known to allow wifi without a data plan.

So, this user upgraded to a new version of OS6 in place of the OS6 version he was running. Wifi no longer worked. Both OS versions were official T-Mobile releases, and 9700 was T-Mobile Brand.

T-Mobile rep on the board thought something was wrong, expecting that wifi would work. The user downgraded, wifi works; upgrade again, no wifi.

I got my old 9700 and verified that wifi still worked with no SIM. Upgraded to latest T-Mobile OS 6. No wifi. I checked, the service books were there. Hmmm. Put in my SIM, wifi works. Take out the SIM, no wifi.

All the above posted on the T-Mobile forum. The T-Mobile rep later posts that after checking he has to report that a data plan is required with that OS.

So, there is more going on than service books. You apparently do need them, but they can be there and you still have wifi blocked.

Just sharing something I learned the other day. New to me anyway.

Remember that T-Mobile used to have an add-on called the Enabler? Absolutely allowed for WiFi access, with a SIM, without any data plan. They stopped that years ago.

Does anyone know where I can go to reinstall the previous build? (6.0, build 1879)

Understand. The part I don't have the complete answer on is how just the OS version changes things with wifi. With my 9700, now, wifi works without a SIM on version 5, but not the latest version 6. And the service books are there in either case. And it isn't OS6 per se. the earlier T-Mobile version 6 works. I guess it is something along the lines of the enabler, but then why the relation to OS?

To the OP, if wifi was working and now it is not, and you check and find the wifi service books are there, then the answer for what happened is probably on the network side. And if you see the service books, it might be worth a try downgrading the OS to see what happens.
