I have a windows server running 2003 that has several domains running on the default SMTP server within IIS.

I have outlook connecting fine to this via SMTP and POP3, but the blackberry internet service refuses point blank to recognise the settings.

I have opened up both SMTP and IMAP ports on the firewall, and as i say, outlook is happy with the account.

Is there something I have to do to get the RIM Internet service to talk to the pop3 server?

Does the RIM IS require that the pop3 and smtp actually be hosted on exchange rather than the default IIS SMTP servers?

All help appreciated.

Assuming that ports are correctly forwarded from your firewall, which would seem to be the case if you've connected with a POP3/IMAP mail client external to your network, then BIS shouldn't know or care that you are splitting the jobs amongst multiple servers.

I would try setting up the account again in BIS. This time, however, enter the password incorrectly on purpose. This will take you to another config screen so that you can fine-tune how BIS is trying to connect to your account. Check that it's using IMAP (and is not, for example, trying to pick up your OWA account).

I have given this a go and not had any luck.

One the first screen "Set up existing email account" it asks for 3 items, the email address, and the password plus confirmation. Whether i enter the correct or incorrect password in this screen i get a message saying

"We were unable to configure [email here] Choose one of the following options and select Next."

If i then choose "I will provide the settings to add this email account" ...

I then get asked for the login, mail server, email account ... but no settings for pop3 or IMAP etc. Just a next button that gives me the "processing, please wait" page and then returns a javascript alert saying ... "an error occurred during account validation, please check your information and try again"

i have quadruple checked the info ... is there anything else i should set on the IIS SMTP server to allow this. It is currently configured to use encrypted password files. And i have opened ports 25, 110, and 903.

As i say, outlook is fine withit, and each time i try this i recieve a message from RIM saying someone tried to set up blackberry email, the email includes the details i put into the website to set it up.

For some reason, outlook and the account name on IIS SMTP is [name], but the RIM webpage needs ....

Sorry to have tied up your time with something so silly, but i assumed that the outlook settings were the ones i needed and the outlook bit does not have the @isp.com bit on it.

Pleased it's resolved! One thing to note: unless you need to get at your SMTP server from outside, this is not needed by BIS as it uses it's own SMTP servers to deliver mail, so you can close port 25. However, based on your previous post you may be using it with Outlook from outside your network.
