New features in BlackBerry Internet Service 2.5

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Doc ID : KB15252
Last Modified : 2008-06-06
Document Type : What Is

Environment
BlackBerry® Device Software 4.5
BlackBerry® Internet Service 2.5
Note: BlackBerry Internet Service 2.5 is available through Asia Pacific service providers.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Details
This article outlines the main changes to BlackBerry Internet Service 2.5.

Attachment downloading in the native file format

BlackBerry Internet Service subscribers can save, edit, upload, and transfer attachments in their native file formats. For a list of supported native file format attachments, see KB15253. BlackBerry Internet Service 2.5 subscribers can edit native file format attachments using embedded or third-party applications. This feature requires BlackBerry Device Software 4.5.

HTML email message viewing

Subscribers can view HTML email messages on their BlackBerry smartphones, including the following file types:

Graphics and photos, including the following:
Embedded images and tables
External images
Active hyperlinks
Paragraph formatting, including the following:
Numbering
Bulleted lists
Justification
Indentation
Font formatting, including the following:
Font type
Color
Size
Effects (italics, bold)
This feature requires BlackBerry Device Software 4.5. For instructions on configuring HTML email message viewing and automatic downloading of embedded images and tables, see KB15254.

Note: For security reasons, externally linked images must be manually retrieved using the menu key.

Important: HTML content cannot be created when forwarding, replying to, or composing a new email message.

Support for Windows Live™ Hotmail® integration

Integrating a Windows Live Hotmail email account results in the following:

Real-time delivery of email messages replaces the standard 15 minute polling interval
No restrictions; all Windows Live Hotmail accounts can be integrated
Note: Some wireless service providers do not support integration with Windows Live Hotmail. Contact your wireless service provider for information on availability.

Windows Live Hotmail email accounts integrated using BlackBerry Internet Service 2.4 or earlier must be deleted and then re-integrated to turn on the enhanced features. For instructions on removing and integrating email accounts to a BlackBerry Internet Service account, see KB04258 and KB03087, respectively

Integrated Windows Live Hotmail email accounts must be revalidated every 90 days to continue receiving email messages to the BlackBerry smartphone. Revalidation is required by Windows Live Hotmail for security purposes. Prior to the end of the 90-day window, a message is sent to the BlackBerry smartphone advising you to revalidate.

No word out on when RIM activates BIS 2.5 for The Americas.
One thing's for sure, it'll be activated here in APAC tonight.

Now my question is... what would be the default message size for an HTML email by then? B/c with what we have right now, it's about 2kb.

Will there be a notification sent or a visible change in BIS so we will know when it was updated?

Question, how will this effect BBConnect users? For a long time now my M600i has been getting emails with the html code but not actually showing the images and such. Very annoying to have to SCROLL to see the real meat of the message. Will this effect that? i.e. make them actually show as HTML emails not code. Or is the software on my device just lame? HAHA (i'm thinking I'll get a pearl)

This is live on Vodafone UK now. However it seems that unless the images are attached to the e-mail then they won't show, even choosing the get images link seems to do nothing.

In terms of two way reconciliation of the read/unread flag for gmail, I can assume no changes ? That's all that's really missing now IMHO.

You should call Voda UK about that. I am sure it was not an intent to not allow downloading of impages when you have option to download them.

It is live for AT&T ( and I sure the other NA Carriers). Just send my service books and under the message options the HTML option was there.

Thank you Penguin. I read that article as well. I will resend my service books anyway and see what happens. My 4.5 beta experience was not a good one but of course I will probably download future betas anyway until I brick the device.

Any joy on this? Seems the UK BIS servers aren't displaying images after "Get Images" is clicked?

Hi, I live in Argentina, yesterday was the 2.5 upgrade, i resend the books and all the options are showed in my device with 4.5.42 beta software.
I read the emails in HTML format, but the images don't appear, only a white box with the name of the image.
Anyone has this problem too?
(sorry for my poor english)
Thanks

welcome to the forums.
it can take a few minutes to show the images, depending on how large the email is/how many images. try scrolling to one image hitting menu > get image, not get images.

I'm having the same trouble... on my first attempt, I removed all e-mail accounts, then sent service books, then added my e-mail addresses back. That didn't work, so then I just deleted e-mail addresses again & added them without sending service books. No images yet. Getting the HTML formatting is an improvement, though.
