Default T-Mobile Handset Software Required to Get EDGE display on 8700c? - 08-06-2006, 02:43 PM

Unlocked my 8700c, ported it over to T-Mo, but despite all indications that I *should* be seeing "EDGE" displayed (and having great signal strength), the T-Mo rep advised me that:

1) I may be getting EDGE service, even though the display isn't indicating it (it does seem pretty fast for GPRS).

2) The EDGE display/functionality might only work properly with the T-Mo handset OS (I currently have Telestra loaded).

Does this sound reasonable? If so, I believe I've seen some links here in the forum to downgrading/changing the handset OS, and I'll do it, but only if that seems like a likely cause. Thanks!

Mark

Wirelessly posted (Cingular 7130c: BlackBerry7130/4.1.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

Does telestra support edge? If so then it should still display. If they don't then it seems like a likely cause.

Yeah, wait just a minute here . .
I was running the Telestra OS w/Cingular and it displayed EDGE.
I don't think I'm going to go through the downgrade process, as it did display with Cingular. Funny though, it seems/feels plenty fast (I can't really *feel* any difference browsing, etc).

If it showed on Cingular then it should show on t-mo. Did you try resending the service books? Might help.

Tried re-registering via the Host Routing Table (several times), tried re-sending service books, and had the T-Mo rep do a "network reset". Who knows? The performance is fine, so I'm not sure how much worrying I'll do about it. Then again, I still have hours to search the web. Unfortunately, Sunday duties call, so it'll have to wait a bit.

Thanks. I suspect that for whatever reason, and despite my having good signal strength, I'm just not grabbing an EDGE connection. No one seems to know why. They say, I *should* get EDGE (I did via Cingular with same device). Maybe I'll drive around and see what happens.

Weak signal in your home. Same thing that was said yesterday, I believe.

Your BB will show EDGE with non "T-Mobile" software versions.

Could be it, I barely get one bar up here because I almost live up on the mountain but I still get an EDGE signal... I guess it just depends :P

Recently, at my home, I only get GPRS with 4 bars. If I travel a half mile in either direction, I'll received EDGE service. It really just depends, to be honest. Sometimes I have EDGE here at the house, even. My entire ZIP code says its EDGE-capable, per T-Mobile. They said they couldn't send out a technician to look in the area, though, since there were no tower alerts... that kind of pissed me off.

In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and is widely regarded as a bad move.

I have the reverse situation. It seems not ever to show EDGE with Telestra OS and T-Mobile service, although TravisM reports that:

"I run Telestra on mine and I use t-mobile and EDGE runs..."

That seems to be the bottom line with me. I haven't done any traveling to check it out yet, but I was told that EDGE can still be spotty. Still, to be honest, unless I have to use the thing tethered as a modem, the performance is fine. Even now tethered (was testing it), it seems to work at least as well as dial-up, which in a pinch, is better than nothing.
