Meh, I dunno ... I don't have access to a Pearl - however, if anyone who does have one would like to go ahead and wipe out all the service books other than the Y!M service book and create a backup file, I would be more than happy to post it (hint, hint). Of course, credit will be given where credit is due. In the meantime, maybe try the 4.1.x service book? Dunno if it'll work, but you could try.

Worked great for me. I had the read only database error but deleting the SYNC service book took care of it. I'm on a BES and my service book was my companies name SYNC instead of DesktopSYNC. Had to reactivate my handheld through the enterprise activation option. Works great! Thanks for your help.

Preeeetty snazzy! ^_^ Good to hear. You should probably also be able to just manually generate a key through Desktop Manager > Redirector Settings > Security > Generate Key Manually.

Default Thanks - 10-27-2006, 04:46 PM

Thanks, Spencer.

I wasn't sure if the service book, which appeared to be for OS 4.x, would work with 3.8.

In any event, I did upgrade to 4.X. As a relative newcomer to all this, it was a total nightmare. But, thanks to this forum I perservered, got the damn OS to work correctly (after having to use another poster's wonderful program to wipe the whole thing clean), and was able to get the yahoo messenger to work without a flaw.

Now the question is how will it appear on my cingular bill!

Thanks Spencer_CDS! I successfully loaded YIM on my 7130c and it works! I thought I would have to get a third party s/w like Verichat or IM+, but not I don't need to.

I don't know why Cingular won't provide YIM for BB when they do it for other phones.

Yahoo! Messenger will be billed only as data services (no SMS messages); unless you have one of the unlimited data plans, you'll be billed per kilobyte above the 4MB limit.

Stellar. Glad to hear it, Chris. I'm still working on a work-around for MMS as well, but I'm struggling a bit with it. The service books won't work in the same manner - seems like it has something to do directly with the handset being registered on RIM's end, as I've noticed that my associate's 7130c, when registering via the HRT editor, received the MMS service books even after deletion, whereas mine would not, despite provisioning.

I'm workin' on it. ^_^

I'm a bit nervous about trying this (looking for a T-Moblie SIM to borrow) because I'm a BES user, and while my IT group just lifted almost all the restrictions, I don't know how to manage this step in the instructons:

Quote:
#4: Log into your BIS account and re-send BIS service books:
BIS 1.8 (from PC) - https://cingular.atgnow.com/cng/tutorials/KB2355.html
BIS 2.0 (from PC) - https://cingular.atgnow.com/cng/tutorials/KB64052.html
BIS 2.0 (from handset) - https://cingular.atgnow.com/cng/tutorials/KB64276.html
How do BES users get our old service books back? If I restore my backup, won't I blow away the needed YIM service book? I'll be back where I started. I wish somebody could turn this into an application...and allow us to add it without using backup-restore.

Ah! No worries, my friend. You need to restore the Y!M service book to your handset first, then "Register Now" via the HRT; after that, you can either have the BES admin resend the Desktop service books, or manually generate an encryption key via the Desktop Manager Redirector Settings icon.

Well in a company of 31,000, getting a BES admin (even finding out who it is) to do anything is a challenge. So I borrowed a colleagues T-Mobile SIM and it worked like a charm. So here's what I don't understand. I used the same website with both carriers, so the service book is there, but Cingular is apparently blocking it? Why on earth would they do that?

Don't know if the makes sense or not but... if all that is missing to get Y-Msgr working (in my case with Cingular on an 8700) is the Service Book... What if I just provide the Server Book (the .ipd file) to my BES administrator and have it 'pushed' to my handheld?? Would something like this work??
(Just trying to see if there might be another/easier way to do it.)
Thanks... Dennie

To be absolutely honest, I have no idea why we're blocking the Y!M service book. I think it has something to be with the folks on the back end who, in negotiation with RIM, have the say on which services are provisioned and which services are not. Your guess is as good as mine.

I don't know a /great/ deal of BES functionality; something tells me, though, that the only way it's going to work is if you manually restore the service book to the device via Desktop Manager. It may be worthwhile to try doing a selective backup of everything on your handset except for service books, then turn off the radio, do a handheld wipe (Settings > Options > Security > General Settings, then click the trackwheel and select "Wipe Handheld"), then restore the Y!M service book, and load the backup of everything else and simply have everything pushed back out by your BES admin once more.

Folks, as for the users who have been asking me if this trick will work with the MMS service books, the answer, unfortunately, is no. Sadly, the MMS service books do not get taken in the Backup/Restore operation, and will not even work with the SIM card trick. The way it is, is that according to the provisioning on the back-end as per your given service provider, it is decided (for example, by Cingular or T-Mobile) which devices (by PIN/IMEI/Model #) are enabled for certain services. Currently, Cingular does not provision for Yahoo! Messenger, and disallows provisioning (deletes the MMS service books when registering with the wireless data network) on ANY BlackBerry handset other than the 7130c and the Pearl (I believe).

So, I don't know how to make it work, unfortunately; seems like it just may be luck as per which handset will be provisioned. =\

I have a follow up question since I am in the same boat. I backed up everything on my BB to get ready for this. Loaded the Y!M as instructed and it worked like a charm. The issue is that I am on BES and BIS and have lots of third party apps that I want to restore. When I restore it, the service book for Y!M was gone and I am back to square one again.

Any suggestions?

OK I just took the leap and it works. Way too cool. Now there's a slight problem, my Password Keeper and AutoText content is gone and now empty. I have tons of information in there that would take quite a bit of time.

I still have the Backup file but is there a way I can just select a certain file(s) from my Backup to restore. I don't want to do the complete Restore or otherwise I would lose the Y!M Service Book.

Spencer, again, YOU ROCK!

Thanks for all the work you have done on these issues.
I just got a Pearl, and used the switch device feature of DM 4.2....

Worked perfect. Didn't have to do anything else. Y!M showed up, and worked immediately.

Just thought I would mention it in case anyone else was trying to get it to work.

Just thought I would mention it in case anyone else was trying to get it to work.
Glad I was able to provide some assistance. =) Have fun!

*Update* - I have found that this method works phenominally, as well, with OS 4.2 for the 8700 series as well. ^_^

I just tried to get the backup file(s) from the original post but I got an error when trying to download the files. It seems like there are no longer available. Can someone help me optain the backup file for 4.1 with the YM service book?

Argh. I have to pay for Boomspeed now?!

Ugh. Vultures. ¬.¬

All right. I'm going to go ahead and re-subscribe, and possibly find somewhere else that I can host these for free. I don't find myself particularly enamored with the idea of paying $6 every month to be able to download either or both of two files whose combined filesize is less than 1KB.

Just finished the transaction; files should be available again in a few hours, though may take anywhere between up to 24 and 72 hours. Be patient. =)

Update: I have just gone ahead and checked the Boomspeed account, and it's up and running again. Enjoy. =)

Quick newbie question. It's even almost on topic ;^)

When I use Y!M on my 8700, does the traffic actually go through my corporate network via BES?

No, I'm not worried about them seeing the content (it would bore them to tears). I'd rather know it just isn't going through the corporate network so I don't have to hear some admin whine about misuse of corp resources.

I don't use the BES browser for just this reason. The IP address resolves to a corporate domain. I use the cingular or internet browsers which resolve to att.com and blackberry.net respectively.

Thanks
