I have written an application which makes an HTTP connection to my server to pull information. It is a test app which only attempts to open the connection and read some bytes.

It fails intermittently (for a 48 hour or so period) on all Verizon blackberries. It doesn't fail on them all at the same time, however, at any given time one device is likely to not work. The java exception is:

Failed to open connection.

If I specify a WAPGatewayIP and WAPGatewayPort, then it seems to always work.

However, Google Maps appears to consistently work even when my app fails.

It appears to be a Verizon problem. Does any one know anything about this? I've seen some other threads where people have problems with 3rd party apps on Verizon BBs but Google Maps keeps working.

What is Google Maps doing differently such that it always works?
