Default New BIS 2.3 - 04-17-2007, 08:27 AM

Not sure if I've been asleep at the wheel, but I can't find any mention on BB Forums of the possible new BIS 2.3 version that is discussed on BB Cool BlackBerryCool » BIS 2.3 launches today? Yahoo, Gmail now push.

Anyone know any more about it?

Perhaps not asleep, but maybe dozing
The search feature found a few threads on BIS 2.3 already on the boards...

It looks like many European carriers have upgrade their BIS to version 2.3 yesterday. The login interface has changed an some of the new features are available, e.g. listening to MP3 files. To be able to use BIS 2.3 you will need to resend the service books. More information about BIS 2.3 can be found here.

BGR is reporting that ATT will upgrade to 2.3 today...i was wondering, is tmo already at 2.3 or will they be upgrading soon?

If the login interface looks like this, then the update was done by your carrier:

Thanks for posting, well in that case it looks like T-Mo UK have updated. Not that I'll probably notice the difference though!

Just checked T-Mobile's site after logging in and one thing I notice is that there is a "Your name" field so that your e-mails appear from Joe Bloggs instead of [email address]. Not sure if this is new or it was always there and I just missed it.

Tested from my OWA accounts and it seems to work, although I couldn't get it to confirm in my GMail account, although that may be a temporary hiccup...

There is also an option for "Synchronize deleted items between this mailbox and my device." that I'm not sure was there before.

Thanks for posting the link. Looking at the "Overview" PDF document I got excited for a second reading this on p.11:

Quote:
wireless email reconciliation from the
work or personal email account

For any existing email account that supports the synchronization of deleted items, subscribers
can delete an email message from the inbox in their email account, and the email message is also
deleted from their BlackBerry device
. Email reconciliation for deleted email messages is turned
on by default. Subscribers can turn off email reconciliation for deleted email messages from their
BlackBerry Internet Service account.
If subscribers add an enhanced Yahoo!® email account, they can open, delete, or send an email
message from their Yahoo! email account, and the change is reflected on their BlackBerry device.
To me, this reads that you can delete an e-mail in your account which is "also deleted from [your] blackberry"... I think the exitement was in vain though as it one-way sync of deletions is still the same.

Wonder why they put that section in?

EDIT - the Help section of BIS also has this tempting piece of info:

Quote:
About reconciling deleted email messages from your email account to your device
When you add an email address to the BlackBerry® Internet Service, you can delete an email message from your email account, and the email message is also deleted from your BlackBerry device.

Reconciling deleted email messages is turned on by default.

Note: If you turn off wireless email reconciliation on your device, deleted email messages do not reconcile between your email account and your device.

Voda UK have upgraded. Some customers are reporting that all of their old e-mails have been re-downloaded to their Blackberry.

Also everyones reply to address has been reset to the BIS address (mobileemail.vodafone.net) for ALL accounts.

RIM does the upgrade for all the carriers. If TMO has been upgraded, login and resend your service books. Still don't think RIM did any of the North American carriers yet.

Just logged in and still at 2.0. You can find out what version you're using by logging into your BIS account > click Help > then click on Legal in the pop up box.

Well, I have to report (and sorry to you folks who aren't on the new version yet!) that the reconciliation seems to work ok after testing it for a day or two.

Positives:
  • I don't have to keep clearing out my handheld several times a day with "delete prior"
  • The above means I can keep e-mails I haven't yet replied to saved for replying when I have a spare minute, rather than accidentally getting rid of them when I am having a clear out

Negatives:
  • Timing - "Reconcile now" doesn't appear to work. Therefore you are dependent on when (presumably dictated by the policies at the NOC) the reconciliation automatically takes place.
  • In my experience (using a couple of OWA mailboxes) the only thing to propagate are deletes/moves in the mailbox. Therefore, if you read a msg on the desktop it remains listed as "unread" on the handheld.

A useful update for me, but I still have the ability to sync the read/replied/forwarded flags on my wish list for future versions! Oh, and the ability to file messages in folders (although I'm not so fussed about reading messages in them) - wish RIM could add that. However, I suppose technically it would be difficult without the full mailbox access that BES provides (and also they wouldn't want to cannibalise the BES market). However, I definitely shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth as I am very pleased they are developing the BIS and adding new features. Well done RIM!

Default O2 UK on BIS 2.3 - 05-08-2007, 02:05 PM

Was just calling into O2 UK to upgrade my BB to an 8800 and I asked what version of BIS they were using as the one my 8700g is one is BIS 1.8. The answer is O2 UK are on BIS 2.3. The support lady upgraded my account in less than 3 minutes. Now I need to figure out how to use the facilities as I currently just have work exchange and GMail forward to my blackberry email, so not sure the reconiliation of gmail will work. Do I need to set up the pop version to do this.

Oh Lord, please let Cingular leave this release alone. Push with my Yahoo! account PLUS the ability to listen to my home Vonage voicemails and work Cisco voicemails without having to take that extra step of actually calling into the voicemail system....I love the thought....

Of course, the IT Dept. could have solved 1/2 this problem by simply updating the BES software to the version that supports .wav attachments, but .... nevermind....

This seems like an odd ( and obscure) section of the forum for this topic.

I am really hopeful for BIS 2.3 with Cingular. I am hoping that it will allow for Yahoo e-mail integration with reconciliation and instant e-mail also. I can then throw out my old g-mail workaround and just get my e-mail from my domain host directly.

Maybe your source got the dates transposed, and Cingular is planning on a 05/07/2013 release of BIS 2.3

Here's hoping they get it in there sooner rather than later...

apparently your friend was mistaken. There has been no change for BIS 2.0 on AT&T as of today :(

Anyone have an actual expected US release date for this?

P.S. Considering the dramatic improvements contained in this upgrade, I am really quite shocked that there's not more buzz on BB Forums about it....

I am also surprised that more people aren't talking about this. I am not sure what is new with push email, because my gmail has always been instant. I would like to know how those meeting invitations will work though.

can anyone explain in really simple terms what this update will do for e-mail?

From what I understand this will allow for instant updates on receiving e-mail?
Does this affect the way all pop3 accounts are or just g-mail and yahoo?

I am just trying to figure out if I should be looking forward to it as much as I am.

Not that I have anything else to offer for a firm date, but I wonder if they will tie into the upcoming AT&T 8300 release. My friend received company info about the initial 5/13, and has not received any further info on why it has been delayed.
