Default Trouble in China

Please Login to Remove!

I am in China and my BB 8800 is sporadic in receiving emails, even though I have a strong cell signal. When I try to use the browser I get a message that says "You are currently not in an area that can support data communication". Then without changing locations, e mails will suddenly arrive at a later time. Is this a problem with my unit? I thought if you had cell coverage, you had email coverage? Thanks your help

What does your connection say. I am assuming your US carrier is ATT?
It should say edge or gprs for data transport. If its only GSM then you are only going to get voice only. Also did you pay for an internatial plan for data and voice?

My carrier is Telstra in Australia and I have an international plan. And I do get e mails - just every so often - not continuosly. The connection fluctuates from EDGE to GSM. Why would that be?

the chinese government is probably filtering through everything to make sure you are not a "political enemy" or that you are trashing the government in any way.

oh the chinese love their money and they love to control it. a communist government with capitalistic traits

I heard China has not yet implemented 3G capability - there is an ongoing argument about it as they are were trying to have it ready when olympics happen in 2008 but it probably will not be fully rolled out. I suspect this is why your BB is not doing very much apart from calls.

I had an 8800 from Verizon in Shanghai for the last few weeks.

2 things:
1) I had that same error message occasionally - but for the most part, emails came in continuously.
2) Make sure in options/connection your phone is set to GSM, not Automatic A or B or Global.

I am in China regularly and haven't had any problems getting my voice mail. Then again I am with Verizon and using the CDMA network while in China (China Unicom and cheaper state side calls) to get my e-mails. I use GSM w/GPRS for my China Mobile SIM. That being said, I am surprised you are have problems getting your e-mail via GSM. Works everywhere for me.
