Default Chunk of Canadian spectrum set aside for the underdog - 11-29-2007, 03:58 PM

New spectrum auction rules could open up competition in the Canadian wireless industry. Dare we to dream of lower rates?

That is good news because Canadians now enjoy the highest mobile phone rates compared to the US and Europe . . . and mediocre coverage! For example I live just outside of Ottawa and Rogers has no coverage in my area. Bell and Telus are spotty.

However, the money-grubbing big three: Bell Rogers and Telus, can still control the system by charging outrageous roaming fees and excessive rental fees for their towers. I am generally a free enterpriser but we have an oligopoly in the Canadian cell phone market so government regulation is necessary to make the big three play nicely!

This step is in the right direction but timid!
