Default Gartner and iPhone - 03-20-2008, 02:21 PM

Taken from an InfoWorld email blast that I regularly receive. Presented for information purposes only; I am not necessarily agreeing with this. {Ducks and hides}

ANALYSTS RECOMMEND IPHONE FOR ENTERPRISE USE

Market research firm Gartner changed its stance against using the iPhone in an enterprise situation on Wednesday. The change of heart comes because of the iPhone's upcoming software upgrade, which will see broader support for security and enterprise e-mail.

Gartner, particularly my friend Ken Dulaney have never liked RIM. They thought they had a bad business model. Wanted them to split into two parts - a la Palm (and how's that working out).

At WES you won't see Gartner.

At Gartner, you on grudgingly see RIM.

Gartner also suggested that companies switch from RIM before the lawsuit was settled.

I guess RIM wouldn't give Gartner free product. I don't know why they just don't like them.

For what it is worth, I have never been impressed with the objectivity of their purported "research." It seems to be a fairly easy proposition to get labeled as a state of the art product -- simply spend enough with them (or Aberdeen, for that matter).

I think you probably nailed the reason with your comment about free product, or lack thereof.

We use Gartner rather extensively. I never have questioned their objectivity (I guess because I agree with them the vast majority of the time) but this one has me stumped.
