[2004-10-15] RIM Blackberry can be remotely re-booted

COMPUTER EXECUTIVES excessively proud of their Blackberry devices could find themselves wondering why the thing re-boots for no apparent reason.

That could be because there is hole in Wireless Handheld 3.x which allows a denial of service attack from outside.

According to Secunia, which reports Hexview's notification of the problem, the Blackberry can't handle request messages with strings larger than 128K in the "location" field. The watchdog timer resets the device.

The vulnerability, said Secunia, has been reported in handheld software version 3.7 service pack one, but prior versions may also be affected.

Isn't this non-news since its just a rehash of the previously reported potential issue?

I'm just reporting it as it's posted on the Internet, just call me "fair and balanced".

IMHO The Inq is important enough to report news off, especially when it's potentially bad news.

Fair enough, but isn't you post a report of a report of a report of a potential issue. ;)
