Hmm... well his columns were being read on printed pages in magazines or the newspaper. Magazines and newspapers sell ads based on circulation and readership, so in fact, there were page views!

True, but the difference is when you read an online column, the page view is for that story, when published in a magazine or paper, it counts for the whole paper or magazine.
