What is Blackberry on Non-RIM hardware? -
04-11-2008, 08:29 AM
I love my blackberry for its e-mail capabilities, but it would be even cooler, and much better if I could get the same capability on another device, like AT&T Tilt or something like that.
Does Blackberry on Non-RIM means you can emulate the Blackberry e-mail client? We do not have BES, I am getting my e-mails via BIS. Just wanted to get more information on this.
Thanks.

penguin3107, thanks for the information.
I wonder if anyone on this site use this service. So if I buy a tilt just wanted to know how it would work, if it just emulates or just integrates. Maybe I will stop by AT&T store.
Thanks again.

It basically gives you the functionality of BES 3.6 - wireless e-mail, using the e-mail client on the phone. PIM sync occurs using whatever software was supplied by the phone (not Desktop Manager). BB Connect is (IMHO) one of the greatest disappointments in the BB universe.

So, the e-mail screen and everything is whatever the phone has. What is the purpose of it. I mean they can just use exchange. I guess it is for people who love their WM phone but their company supports only BES. I can see that, since WM can do much better than BB on certain fields.

I don't know which version of BBConnect you used, but PIM sync on my Tilt is OTA.

I wish I'd seen this before I coughed up $500 and changed providers for my 8320... I trialled the HTC 620 and loved the full-functionality wireless and ability to handle streaming audio, but ultimately went with the BB for the OTA PIM functions.
As it is now, 'buyers regret' kicks in every month when I pay for the data plan I need but don't use. Sure WM OS has issues, but I could've used the phone for 1/3 what I'm paying now.
Enough griping. Does BB Connect allow policies to be applied from the BES like with a full BB device? Such as requiring a password and auto-lock, forcing the enabling of a firewall, etc? Our organization is looking to put some controls on smartphone use in the corporation, and it would be useful if we could get our non-Blackberry devices under some kind of policy control.

BBConnect requires a BB data plan, so it doesn't help you there.
Yes, policies are applied to BBConnect, but I assume that there are some policies that don't apply. There is a Blackberry lock on my Tilt that was forced on configuration. If I use the Blackberry browser, it goes through the firm's network. I can even look up e-mail addresses on the firm directory, but it's not as easy as look-up in a real Blackberry.
To be honest, I got the Tilt because I wanted BB connectivity in Japan. When the 9xxx comes out, I'll probably get that.

Hmmm, sounds promising from a policy perspective. Like every organization, ours suffers from portable device proliferation, and many people don't want BB devices (but of course still want corporate mail), so if BB Connect allowed them to use the device of their choice while still giving IT some policy control, that might be a good compromise.
I heard that they were looking into Good Tech's products because of the lack of device lock-in, sounds like BB Connect offers the same kind of flexibility. I'll pass it on.
There's no Blackberries in Japan? Why would you need a Tilt?

One problem with this is that BBConnect is not available for a lot of devices. However, it's certainly worth a look.

The only GSM compatible network in Japan is 2100MHz UMTS (3G). The Blackberry 8707 was recently introduced in Japan, which works on that network, but only works on the old GPRS network (very slow) on U.S. frequencies. Further, nobody sells it here, so it would be eBay or something of that sort. The Tilt has Tri-band UMTS (2100, 1900 and 850MHz), so it operates at 3G in nearly every country on Earth.
