Default Why Can't you have BB Messenger on Non-RIM Hardware? - 06-21-2008, 06:34 PM

This may seem like a stupid question, but a friend of mine has an AT&T Tilt with BB Connect (That's like a Volvo with a Gun Rack). He has a PIN to be registered on the BB network. So if BB Messenger is designated by PIN, why isn't it possible to have it on your device. Please refrain from flaming.. I'm just asking..

It's part of the BlackBerry OS. Since a Tilt can't use BlackBerry OS, can't have BB Messenger.

That's the only thing that I can think of. They'd have to make a version of it specifically for the BBConnect/Tilt or whatever model device is being used.

Thanks! I love responses are so quick here! That was in the back of my mind since the program is based off of Java but would still have to run on a Windows Mobile or Symbian phone. But hypothetically, could it work if someone built the program on a different platform?

Hypothetically....sure. But I believe RIM would have to create it to work since it would be proprietary to their network.

The Non-RIMs are assigned a PIN so that a BES (blackberry enterprise server) knows what phone to send email to. And depending on what phone you have, the BIS (blackberry internet service) as well. Also, the reason you can't get blackberry messenger is because it is an application that only comes with RIM HandHeld software and you need blackberry service books for it to run. Non-RIM devices that use BB Connect only get service books for Email. So No Blackberry? No Blackberry Messenger.

I'm not sure if it applies here, but I think it's interesting and unique that BlackBerry has its own stack - a lot of functionality rides that - and other handsets/services can't.
