Default Migration issues - 06-17-2006, 05:26 AM

I'd have thought one of the most important things to consider when migrating from BB to devices like E61 is the desktop sync software.

I've had a number of Nokia PDAs; I haven't researched E61 but, given that Nokia have standardised on one version of PC Suite, it's unlikely that this device will be much different to its predecessors.

Comparing Desktop Manager to PC Suite is a case of tools v toys. The Nokia UI is slow and clunky and you can have hours of harmless fun getting bluetooth to work properly.

I's almost impossible to import contacts from Outlook into the correct fields. And when syncing, apart from deciding who wins in case of conflict, there's no further control over which records are updated and where.

On backup/restore, it refuses to copy protected stuff like ringtones, and I've never yet performed a restore which resets all my settings and preferences.

So for me, this is just another case where BB is "less is more". OK so my 8700v has no camera, MP3 player or WiFi, but it does what it says on the tin in a clear and competent way.

And judging by some of the posts querying the implementation of BB Connect, a lot of push email expectations are going to be dashed before non-RIM hardware offers the same seamless experience that BB users have been used to.

For the moment, I'm staying put.
