BB Connect 4 on o2 XDA Exec - HELP, can't register device -
05-23-2007, 03:43 PM
Hi All, wicked site!
I have an o2 account on the Blackberry Unlimited plan, and hooked up to a Blackberry 7290 successfully. I downloaded BB Connect 4 and installed onto my o2 Exec (HTC Ultimate). The software gave me a PIN and IMEI and when I go onto the o2email.co.uk site to register my device to my account, it says that an invalid PIN or IMEI have been entered and to re-check my details. I did a hard reset of the XDA Exec and re-installed, thinking it would give me a different PIN, but it's the same.
I also tried the Register button on the BB Connect software on the PDA itself. It looks like it's trying to connect to something, but then nothing happens. I hope someone can help. Any ideas guys? Anyone else have this problem?

well it's not officially released yet so don't try calling o2 for support. I don't think that connect 4.0 was designed to run on a WM5 device..howevere that doesn't mean it wont work...
is it giving you a null pin or is it one starting 6 or 7 which are valid BB connect pins?

The PIN starts with a 6 and is an 8-digit string of numbers with the letter B in it. Does this sound like it should work? I don't think I'm doing anything wrong as I registered the Blackberry 7290 on the same site.

I can't remember now - I've been on SO many sites trying to get this to work. I think it was xda-developer forums. I've tried BB Connect 2 and get the same PIN, so it's still no-go.

yes it does sound right, then pin is a hexadecimal number - so it users 0-9 plus A-F as the characters. It would help if you could post a link to the sw you found. AFAIK BB connect 4 has not yet been released for the WM5 devices

It might be your plan.
See if your provider offers a Blackberry Connect plan and switch to that.

Welcome to the forums...and I agree 'plans' are usually the solution of 30% of all 'can't connect' problems however in this case the op said "I have an o2 account on the Blackberry Unlimited plan, and hooked up to a Blackberry 7290 successfully." which means it's unlikely to be a plan issue and more likely to be a device one..

With some providers there is a difference between Blackberry plan (BIS and BES) and a Blackberry Connect plan.

is the BB connect 4.0 you downloaded meant for this O2 Exec?
RIM seems to have implemented some control on their end to disallow connection from "unauthorised" BB connect. For example, BB connect for Treo does not work on HP, even though both are WM5 device. Some says it is due to licensing issue on BB connect.
And possibility is the firmware level. For example, BB connect for symbian phones are known to be tied to the phone firmware level. This could also be the case for BB connect for WM5.

I decided to buy a Nokia E61, downloaded and installed BB Connect, registered the new device and it just worked straight away. Very impressive and hassle-free. I've sold the XDA Exec now as this solution works much better without changing my plan (o2 Blackberry Unlimited). I can also use Mail 4 Exchange on the Nokia too. The only thing is, does anyone know how to set up my work email on my Blackberry account? It is Exchange Server 2003, with mobile extension so I could ActiveSync with with XDA.

BB Connect 4 working -
05-31-2007, 04:18 AM
Hi,
I recently downloaded BB Connect 4.0 for the Dopod 838pro (HTC Hermes) and it worked fine. Then i got a new T-Mobile Wing to play with and i tried it on that and what do you know, it worked.I used it for about a day and then put the BB enable sim back into my BB 8800.
Good luck!

Its also network Dependant. Your network can block some PIN no's.
Same thing in India. We can use blackberry service with a blackberry handset or certain SonyEricsson or Nokia handsets, but it does not support Windows Mobile Phones. For WM phones, we have to apply for another plan called "WINDOWS MOBILE PUSH EMAIL" service.

hypermaster - do you know whether BlackBerry's on US carriers can access data in India?
I'm on a Verizon BlackBerry 8830 (dual mode CDMA as well as GSM via a Verizon-Vodaphone SIM card) on a Global Unlimited BB Data Plan through Verizon, but have heard that Verizon has no data available through roaming in India.
I find that hard to believe, especially since Verizon users are able to use roaming voice in India on CDMA as well as GSM networks.
Or, perhaps, Verizon just hadn't updated their data roaming partner country list on their website...
Would be great if you can confirm, thx.

Yes it works. I;m on AIRTEL Network here & i used it while i was in USA earlier , so it definately works the other way as well. I dont know if theres a tie up with HUTCH. Also Global Unlimited is great, cause that you dont get charged extra. I know friends who have the same plan in UK & they come over regularly.
In India we dont have the plan & i ended up paying a bomb for my roaming DATA Charges.

hypermaster - thx.
My Verizon BB 8830 is CDMA, but has the Vodafone SIM card inside (part of the Verizon Global Kit).
I'm pretty certain that I can roam GSM & GPRS networks anywhere Vodafone has a roaming agreement.
Look what I found for Vodafone BlackBerry roaming users; so I guess I can use GPRS in India on AirTel -

ofelas... yes you can use the Vodafone SIM card. We have the same thing here in India as well... If you have a Reliance (CDMA) connection & want to roam, we get a KIT with a GSM SIM Card on it (though now we can simple take our CDMA Handset to USA & put it on & we're Roaming) In Any case they give us a SIM Card which you can Roam with in places where they dont have CDMA as well.
One thing to confirm before you leave is that the SIM Card you got, has all the services you want activated on it as well or no.
Eg.- Roaming , GPRS , Blackberry Connect (Unlimited Plan)
Just make sure that the SIM card will have all the services activated as per your present handset plan , services.

Yup, got all that among others: looking forward to trying it out in India!
Also, browsing through the pre-loaded list of GSM/Global providers inside my 8830< i see 7 entries for AirTel...that's a good sign, I reckon?!

Yes, Airtel & Hutch are both Good & i hear BPL has also started Blackberry Service.
I;ve not had problems so far with Blackberry in India or even while travelling anywhere out of India...
Just in Case their Help Line No. 121 for general & 7070 for Blackberry Service..these are toll free numbers from your Mobile Phone (THESE ARE FOR AIRTEL)
For Hutch the Toll Free HelpLine No is 1111
