Hello Fellow crackberry heads!

i would just like to let everyone know about my experience so far about Unite...

First off the install and everything went good and fine, installed everything correctly without issue...

i followed all steps set up and again everything went good...

so i plug my BB into the USB, as you need to so the program can install download manager to it. well i did all this, and i was like cool, now i can see and get stuff off my PC at home... right on!

boy did my opinion change fast... i hard reboot the berry and all these application permissions pop up like weeds! so i'm like ok good more security, i select yes to all my apps...

i start testing everything out, calendar good, address book good, notes good, apps good, oh but wait.... wheres my browser icon? resend service books... nothing, ok fine... i hit alt, return and its in the running apps... so i open it and everything seems fine at first... try to go to a site... nope "the internet has been blocked by your IT policy" i'm sorry what?! what IT policy?!

i go into options> security> general> and sure enough theres an IT policy named "Unite!" WTF!!! i didnt know this was going to happen... so i rehook up the BB to the PC and launch unite! and make sure all the settings were good... everything was and the Icon came back, ok cool so far so good...

at this point i was like its ok i will live with it because of the download manager...

well since i have been having problems with my BBM and 4.5 (it likes to delete my contacts whenever i do a hard reset) my contacts were gone... no issue, did a back up before all this started... load DM and restore, once that was loaded i go into advance to just selectively restore my BBM contacts... it loads fine...

then i look... i'm sorry are all my options for selectively restoring my device greyed out?! oh yes they are... great JUST GREAT!!! with the IT policy i couldnt selective restore my device, how nice... so i double check the settings in Unite!, nothing...

ok i'm pissed at this point... so i wipe with JL_cmder, reload the OS, that took about 30 mins. everything went fine and dandy... reload all my stuff (3rd party apps) and then check to see if the IT policy is there... YUIP!!! GGGGGGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!

ok so i load JL_cmder again and "reset to factery" (which i love btw with 4.5) and that prompts me to pull the battery to continue, so i do... put it back in and well now my device is "scrubbing"................

3 hours later.... everything is back up... all 3rd party apps are there, device is done scrubbing... so the moment of truth. before i do anything to the device i check to see if the IT policy was still there.... NOPE! gone! thank gosh...

i go to my PC uninstall Unite! and then reboot PC... plug in the device and 1 hour later i'm done restoring all my info, and settings...

this all ended at 4 am....

what a night.......



in short... unless you are managing a small business or family... this is NOT for the individual user... it would have been cool and all if it let me selectively restore my device, but since i could, there is no point for it...

well there you have it folks...

Cory I am having the same exact issue I am done with this program nice effort but not worth the headaches I have wiped and restored so many times now I am done good bye unite.

I am also very unhappy with it. Wish it said it was gonna install an IT policy, i wouldn't have tried it at all.

Now, i'm loading 4.5, just to see if i can use JL_Cmdr so i can resettofactory (hopefully it will work) Please!!!

Would have done that at 330am, but 6am work comes early, so i just loaded the blank policy.bin and at least could use my BB.



Unite "seems" like a good idea, but it is done poorly. The IT policy should be user controlled, if there is going to be any.

If i wanted an IT Policy, i would just get a BES, lol

agreed cj I cant get my browser to come back now. I have wiped resent service books backed up and I am not happy at all. Thats what i get for installing something i wasnt meant too.

Same here was u til 4am wipeing my BB and reloading everything.

Right now, i am in the process of loading all different OS to my BB, and so far it working.

I use the 4.2.2.194 OS

This is what i have done so far::

At 330am, i loaded John Clark's blank policy.bin file, just so i could use my BB at 6am..

So i loaded the beta 4.5
Used the JL_Cmdr to resettofactory.
Remove battery to invoke wipe.


Checked, and the policy is GONE!!! could tell, the red lock by the Firewall is gone, i can now disable it again..

Then, i reload 4.2.2.194 to my BB, and it just finished: lets see......


SUCCESS!!!!!!

IT Policy is GONE!!!

All I want is to be able to share a calendar, not all this other crap they put on there, especially an IT policy you can't control.

The install of Unite should definetely be done at your own risk. That being said there are some of us who have had sucess with it.

I have it installed and it works flawlessly. If you are getting the IT Policy error when you try to go to a site try to not use your bookmarks. Type something new.

There are users like dawg who is getting the error as soon as he hits the browser. I was getting the error also, but not until I tried to go to a website from my bookmarks or my history.

i got the it policy error when i try to open the browser from the running apps.

going to uninstall the beta 4.5 now. back to plain old solid running 4.2 now.

i will miss the fully functional L theme

I'd like to take a moment to say thanks for the warnings, guys. I downloaded Unite last night, with the plan of installing this weekend. My BB is just a personal device, and Unite sounded like a good learning experience that wouldn't really do any harm.

What about those of us who can't upgrade to OS 4.3 nor get our hands on 4.5? How do I clear the locked firewall?

you cant. you can push a blank IT policy to the device but that is it. The reason people are so upset by this software is because it was intended for a very specific audience. It is just like BPS/BES but scaled down for a family/small business to use. Just like every other piece of server like software it is bound to have security on it (after all, BBs are the most secure devices on the market). Downloading/Installing software without proper documentation (ie software you were not supposed to have) is asking for trouble.

to clear the restrictions in the IT policy, backup your PIM data (synchronize to outlook) and then wipe the device. follow JCs post in the RIM software forum for removing the IT policy. you will not be able to disable the firewall and other services may be disabled as well, but you should get your browser back

Removing a user from the BlackBerry® Unite!™ software will stop email messaging, calendar and contact sharing, and file transfer.

To remove a user, complete the following steps:

Click the Users button.

Click the button for the user you want to remove.

Click the Device management button.

Click the Users Details tab.

Click the Delete user button.

Click the OK button to confirm the deletion.

Yeah, that's what I figured... I did replace the IT policy, but the firewall thing bugs me alot. I feel like the job is only half done. Oh yeah... I learned my lesson!

I wish I would have read this thread before installing Unite.
I am wiping my handheld as we speak. This seems silly that there would be problems like this.

Excepting its not a problem, its a part of the software. Its like call logs/sms/etc being deleted. its the way it was designed and there is a REASON for it.

How would disabling web browsing be a part of the software?
The option was enabled in Unite, but I couldnt use the browser.

I have had Unite! on my device and if you set it up properly you can indeed use the browser. If you are on a BES, the BES IT policy also will over-write the policy from Unite! (wether it be more or less restrictive)

All y'all are the best. I'm the if-at-first-you-don't-succeed-read-the-manual sort, so I would have been one to download and try without reading. Calendar sharing was what I was interested in, but I'm doing ok with calendar invites, so thanks Corey, Dawg, and others for going first and reporting back.

You know I love spending my friday nights glued to my PC because I have to wipe my device lol and reload the OS. Anything for the team!

This happens on BES too. It is not a function of the policy, it is because you are set up for wireless sync. You need to disable the wireless sync for the item in question first. I haven't finished setting up Unite, so I can't comment on that yet, but for BES, you go into Enterprise Activation on the device. Type Alt-CNFG and then set wireless sync to no. Do your restore. Then go back in and set to yet.

You can also turn off wireless sync for your PIM data in each application. For instance in the Calendar app, you can go to Options and turn off wireless sync right there, restore, then go back and turn it back on. The last time I went to alt+cnfg in the EA screen just to look at what it did, it ran another EA after and I didn't even change anything.

All of the IT policy business as well as the problems have scared me away from a trial install of the program.

Yup. It runs a full resync. It is usually quicker than a bulk load though.

Poking around in the database reveals that the ITPolicy tables are the same (or pretty close) to the BES. As a matter of fact, the whole Unite DB looks a lot like BESMGMT. I might throw berrystats on it just for fun. My point being that we can probably dummy up an IT Policy on the BES that we like and insert it in as the default policy on Unite. I need to change one to enable wireless bypass. It appears that the default on Unite is the same as on BES. Looks like I have a little project at work next week.

Do you need a bes data plan or will it work with the regular personal data plan?

Just be aware that it adds an IT policy to the device. Any device with OS 4.3 and higher can have the policy removed, though. It's a bit of a hassle but not like it used to be.

I saw smething about it disabling the browser on the BB. I have a IT policy from my BES on the device . Would it be different from that and if so what does the UNITE IT policy do?

its syncs its own calendar not outlook. I didnt want to sit and enter every calendar event over so I didnt even mess with it to see how far out it would go I have a couple hundred events scheduled. Hell no I aint retyping .

Oh I understand that, which sucks too, no way to import. But I thought I saw it would only syc for example 50 days back and 100 days foward.

I've been wanting to check out this BB Unite stuff since I first heard about it almost a year ago. Now that I have it, I wish I never installed it. BB unite sucks! IT policies, random policies about nothing, never sinc'd a thing on my phone even when I had it installed. Complete waste of my time and effort.

I'm really not sure what the problems are, it's working completely as advertised for me. My Blackberry is also on a BES, my wife's is not. No issues for me whatsoever, the only issue for her was the IT Policy/Browser error when accessing an old bookmark (all other sites are fine). Emails arrive a lot faster than with BIS.
