Unite ITPolicy modifications -
05-12-2008, 04:10 PM
THIS THREAD IS NOT ABOUT GETTING RID OF THE ITPOLICY OR WHINING ABOUT IT MESSING UP YOUR BROWSER
This thread is about modifying the default ITPolicy laid down by Unite so that you can customize it to fit your needs. My personal goals are to: - Enable Bluetooth Desktop Connectivity
- Enable Wireless Bypass
- Enable GPS Tracking
- Enable Other Browsers
**************************************
Steps for changing ITPolicy on Unite:
IF YOU DO NOT UNDERSTAND THIS FULLY DO NOT TRY THIS. I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR FOULED UP UNITE SERVERS. THIS WORKED FOR ME AND I AM PUTTING THE INFO OUT THERE FOR OTHERS THAT WANT TO EXPERIMENT.
- Download
- Double-click
- Answer Prompts
- Enjoy
There were too many steps, so... I created a VBScript. It is internally documented and can be viewed in Notepad.

You are missing the point here. This thread is not about the whole whining I want to get rid of the ITPolicy. This is about changing the ITPolicy that Unite pushes down. I probably should have been more specific. Will update the top post.

sorry. i didnt get that from the original post.
it's not really changing it, but if you connect the device again, you can log into unite and reactivate the browser.

If I recall, this was so that one could use bluetooth, right? That would be a neat feature.

It works by the way. Email and web work fine over bluetooth. One of my voice only devices already had a BES policy on it because I plugged it in at work. So I dummied up a new policy for it on the BES and then connected it bluetooth to the unite box. Works like a champ. I am going to export the new policy I made on the BES and import it into the Unite box. Change it to the default and see if I can get my other device (never touched a BES) working. If it is successful, I will post some instructions.

Created three new ITPolicies on the BES for Unite.
- Bluetooth - enables bluetooth desktop connection and wireless bypass
- Tracking - Tells devices to report their GPS location back to the Unite server on 15min intervals

- Bluetooth and tracking - Duh
BCP Export:
Code:
bcp "SELECT * FROM ITPolicy2 Where ID > 5" queryout C:\Docume~1\username\Desktop\ITPolicy2.txt -S server\instance -T
This exported the binary data and I can use it in reverse to insert the data into the Unite server. The ID > 5 was just the easiest way to specify which ones I wanted. Your query will vary.
Here is the table structure we are dealing with:
Code:
9.0
8
1 SQLINT 0 4 "" 1 Id ""
2 SQLCHAR 2 128 "" 2 PolicyName SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS
3 SQLINT 0 4 "" 3 AllowOtherEmailServices ""
4 SQLINT 0 4 "" 4 AllowOtherBrowserServices ""
5 SQLIMAGE 4 0 "" 5 HandheldBlob ""
6 SQLIMAGE 4 0 "" 6 DesktopBlob ""
7 SQLINT 1 4 "" 7 SessionId ""
8 SQLBINARY 2 8 "" 8 Lurnum ""
When I get home tonight, I will import them into Unite and post the results.
Again, this information is just for the few nerds that want to follow along. When I am done and it is tested, I will try to post files and concise instructions.

---This is not directed at you, so don't take it personal. I just feel the need to say it.---
Not to put too fine a point on it, but Unite wasn't released to the majority of the audience here. Myself included. So in a sense (to us) it is beta software. You should treat it as such. I had a hell of a time with it, but I didn't whine about it. first off, it wouldn't install because the MSDE setup kept bombing. I went out myself and downloaded MSDE separately and installed it. Then, I had problems with the "Server" service not being enabled on my machine so the controller kept bombing on its RPC calls. The dispatcher was coming up too quickly and it would fail because MSDE wasn't started yet. Since the controller wouldn't connect to the dispatcher, it couldn't restart it automatically. I say all of this to say that if you aren't a customer of the carrier that released it, you need to shut up or deal with it. pick one.

you havent seen my whining about anything at this point. i'm posting threads on a help forum for HELP, and i thought that is what its for. i know it wasn't released to everyone, but regardless there are users on here that know more about it than me (you included) and i'm just wanting to have my phone back working properly. excuse me if my post are bothering you, just skip them if thats the case, and if you would like to help that would be appreciated .

That wasn't directed at you. You just reminded me of it and it seemed like a good time to rant. That is all. Sorry to offend I can remove the post if you would like. PM me and I will edit it.

Got It!!!! I was able to import the policy onto Unite. Shut down blackberry services. Imported policies. Changed the ID in the UserConfig table. Restarted services. Plugged in my device and it got the new policy. If anyone else is feeling adventurous, I will post the files and the steps I went through. By the way, I lifted the defaulted "There shall be no other browsers before me" restriction while I was at it...
