Question SMTP authentication - 08-19-2008, 09:12 AM

Hi,
I pretty sure the feature doesn't exist, or at least config is not done from the WEB interface... but who knows... or anyone from BB will read that and add as feature request for next version...

My SMTP server requires authentication, is that supported ?
Seems pretty basic though....

The BlackBerry never connects to your SMTP server, so it's irrelevant in regards to how you need to authenticate to it.

Outbound mail sent from the device gets sent via RIM's infrastructure and the carriers network. It does not use your SMTP server at all.

Unfortunately for the case of a Unite email account penguin3107 is mistaken.

Kromega: I have a recollection of setting Unite up with an SMTP server that needed authentication. That was a while ago and I only did it for testing. I think the authentication is on the advanced page, in the same place you set the port and SSL. Or I made the whole thing up in a dream

I'm out of the office until Thursday, but I will have a look at it then if no one else has posted a definitive answer by then.

Ah... my bad. I didn't realize this was in the Unite forum area.
Sorry about that. Ignore my post above.

I've checked, no username/password. I must have dreamed it. I would think this would be a common complaint with more ISPs needing authentication to send mail. I manage all my own SMTP servers so it isn't an issue for me.

For me this works. It takes the same user ID and password as for the POP3/IMAP login. I am using Unite 1.0.2.

good news if you have the same account... in my case, it's done through 2 different providers, and of course usernames are not the same :(

looking fwd for next release... but can't find any info on that... RIM is not very talkative about Unite...
