Here is my mini review of the Plantronics 655 vs the Plantronics 510, for those of you trying to decide which one to get. Note: Both headsets were used on a Blackberry 8700c

655 Pros
Very small & Light, fits in pocket nicely. Even in lipstick holder
USB Charger uses same USB cable as the Blackberry USB Cable so no additional charger needed
Battery Charger is a nice addition if you don't have access to USB or an Outlet
Volume is nice
Fits in ear nicely, no need to hook over your ear
Easy to put on with one hand

655 Cons
Picks up WAY too much background noise. Using this at the airport, resturant and the mall, the person on the other end would complain that it was way too noisey.
Battery life is extremely short. I averaged about 2 hours of talk time.
The way the ear nub sticks out of the lipstick holder, while you have it in your pocket the ear nub could fall off
Buttons are hard to push and you will pratically shove the heatset in your ear trying to press the buttons. Luckily volume and mute can be controlled by the phone
Slow Sync time with calls. About 3 seconds

510 Pros
Very good noise cancellation. While in the mall, airport and resturant, you could barely hear the noise. Even outside in downtown NYC you could not hear the traffic. The noise cancellation isn't perfect, there are times when it picks up noise like the hotel guy blowing a whistle to catch a cab but the noise cancellation is 100x better than the 655.
Folds up nice to fit in the pocket
Battery life is really good. I use it off and on for 2-3 days without needing a charge
Volume is louder than the 655
Priced better than the 655
Faster sync time with callls. About 1 second


510 Cons
Hard to put headset on with one hand. Unfolding and putting it on with one hand is nearly impossible. I just unfold it and stick it in the cup holder before I start driving .
Seperate charger. Does not use the same USB Cable as the Blackberry.
Bigger than the 655 so not as much room in your pocket

Loses connection to phone every so often.. don't know if this because i'm accidently pressing the headset power button while it's in the pocket.

I sold the 655 and kept the 510. I miss the easier to put on and small size of the 655, but everything else, the 510 is way better at. I hope this little comparison helps you if you are trying to decide.

I understand reading through some threads, that the RIM version is better than the plantronics.

The RIM Hs-655 has different firmware than the Plantronics. The plantronics has issues with the Blackberry

Gotcha. I am using the Bluespoon AX2 and the reception stinks.

What does the RIM version fix, the sync delay? I doubt if it improves battery life or background noise.

I read a couple of threads on the forum which have indicated less delay and better reception.

Can the experts onsite suggest models for a user with glasses to consider, or features to look for/avoid for people who wear glasses?

[Yes, I ran a search and saw the comments about the Flamingo -- just looking for other alternatives give that the flamingo has small buttons and could only be used on right ear.]

I have a plantronics Voyager 510. Not only does it work very well with my 7250 but it also operates with my NORTEL PBX office phone. One head set for both phones.
It also has a noise cancelling mic.

Any advice for b/t earpieces for the 8703e with sprint?

I just switched to a BB Pearl from a RAZR. I have a Moto H3 headset which I need to replace because it echos. I had it replaced by Motorola but it still echos so I'm giving up on it. I was looking at the BB HS-655 but the Rogers dealer says they are no good. He is recommending the Moto H700.

Barjohn, are you going to review the HS-655? Any comments on it?

I have just posted my review of the QSTIK-EVOQ headset. It may be my last due to lack of support. Despite tens of thousands of hits and numerous personal emails support has totaled about $30. Apparently saving money hasn't even been worth $5 on a visit where you can get factual and comprensive test data on each of these numerous headsets or cellphones. Enjoy this last one folks!

One of our executives came to me today to tell me of an issue they were having with their Blackberry 7250. After they use the Bluetooth in their Toyota, the volume controls get stuck.

When they are in the office, after the drive and they receive a phone call, the volume may be to low. when they go to increase the volume, the volume does not change. The volume seems to be stuck. The only way I have found to fix this, is to remove the battery and replace. There has to be another way. Any ideas?

I have the RIM version and find the sync delay to be almost nil - very quick response. Volume is significantly better than my previous headsets -- even better than the OEM wired earpiece.

Like others said, though, the 655 picks up too much background noise. Walking outside or driving with a sunroof open normally will kill conversations.

I'm ordering a Jawbone for those situations. In any other circumstances, the RIM 655 is an ideal Bluetooth device.

How can you tell the RIM version from the standard 510 for ordering purposes? Does it have a different number or letter before it?

I have both the Jawbone and the 655. When listening, the Jawbone is better because it mutes the microphone (it uses a check sensor to hear when you are talking and unmute the mic). But when talking, both have the same noise levels (very low, but background noise still interferes). Neither can defeat wind noise (air flowing against their microphone).

Only device that can defeat loud noises (like in a nightclub or airport) that I have found is the WIRED "TheBoom" microphone. They also make a bone-induction version that can defeat wind noise.

Has anyone tried the Plantronics 910 with an 8700? I am thinking of getting a 510, but saw the 910 and was curious.
