I'm currently using a 27x27 icon for a prototype application I'm working on, and compared to the other icons in the home screen, it looks pretty ugly. I guess bigger would be better, but is there any specific (minimum) size that's recommended for application icons?

32x32 is the normal size. However, occasionally 32x32 is a little bit big.

You can give size of icons on device via java code:

int height = HomeScreen.getPreferredIconHeight();

int width = HomeScreen.getPreferredIconWidth();

Wow, that's a lot of different sizes! I think I'll try using a large size and letting the system scale it down... I guess you can't really pick the truly "right" size, even if you're targeting a specific model, if the preferred height can change whenever the user switches themes.
