What does blackberry have in the way of DLL or api's that can facilitate a wired connection to the desk?
I'm new to the connected world of blackberry so I've likely missed the part that talks about wired connections to a computer that isn't a server.

I want to move custom app data from desk to hand held and back and I don't have a data plan. What to do?

you can use usb. There is a demo application coming with the JDE.

Is there a way of using the desktop API without installing desktop manager and just only have device manager? I am trying to write an windows application to talk to the blackberry 8830 to read some contacts information, I dont really want to install another java app on the blackberry device and open a channel to talk to it, is there a way to do it?

you can create a backup and read the data from the backup, there are certain tools (not for free, though) that allow this.
