Default Blackberry Simulator not connecting with ESS

Please Login to Remove!

I have scoured this and other forums and have not been able to find an answer to this question; I hope that someone who has resolved a similar experience might be able to help.

I am using the Email Server Simulator (rel. 4.1.2 and 4.1.4) in standalone mode with the Blackberry Device Simulator 4.1.0 release. I have been able to set this up and, using Outlook Express, to send Email to the server and have it deposited in the server's "incoming" folder. However, when I try to send or receive e-mail on the Device Simulator, I get a "Failed to contact service" message. (This seems to be the opposite experience of most people, who can send mail from the Device Simulator to ESS but can't get the desktop E-mail client to work with ESS.)

This seems strange, because when I start the Device Simulator, the command window for the ESS gives the message:

<Sun Apr 06 07:37:41 EDT 2008>: [22] :<DEBUG>:<LAYER = UDP, EVENT = Receiving, S
IZE = 11, SOURCE = localhost:19780, DESTINATION = localhost>

which suggests to me that the Device Simulator has successfully pinged the ESS. None of the code above that in the command window suggests that there are any problems (I've copied it below in case I'm wrong, though). And, when I try to send a message from the Device Simulator, no error code appears in the ESS window.

Has anyone else had this experience, or have any insight on what might be going on here? Is there a configuration step on the Device Simulator that I'm missing? (FYI, I've tried this with all antivirus and firewall software turned off; still no go.)

Thanks for any help that anyone in the community can provide.

FWIW, I've resolved this by just using the JDE v. 4.1, rather than the separate ESS and simulator downloads.

To get the ESS to run properly in this version, you may need to edit the setESSEnv.bat file and change the line that reads

@SET ESS_CLASSPATH=%ESS_CLASSPATH%;%CLASSPATH%

to read

@SET ESS_CLASSPATH=%ESS_CLASSPATH%;"%CLASSPATH%"

I, at least, needed to do this or the ESS wouldn't open; instead it just died after a brief opening of a command-line window.

Whew.
