Default gprsinfo / 8330 / verizon ... unsupported operation

Maybe I'm missing something here. I had some code that did something like this:

GPRSInfo.GPRSCellInfo info = GPRSInfo.getCellInfo();
int value = info.getMNC();

On the simulator it works fine. Put it on the actual device, and I get an exception. If I comment that part out, it works fine. Is this a verizon thing? A noob thing?

Maybe it's because the back of my phone says "3G CDMA", which means I should be using CDMAInfo.CDMACellInfo.

Is there a way I can check for which network type I might be dealing with?
