Default application indicator 4.2

I want to display a small icon near where the default message icon resides. Is it possible to do this in os 4.2.xx?this can be achieved through application indicator class which is supported only in above 4.6 os.then how gmail and facebook app use this feature in 4.2 os ...thanks in advance

There is no API provided for this prior to 4.6.

FaceBook app was developed by RIM and therefore has access to the RIM-proprietary API's.

Not sure about GMAIL, but I'm guessing they got access to these API's also.
