JDE issues..?

Hi,

I'm looking to get started with some blackberry development, and I recently installed the JDE (running on a VM, Linux is my native OS). Thing is, I can't get the JDE to run at all. It always freezes on the "searching classes" bit, and I can never get past that.

I'm running the OS 5 beta version... any suggestions?

I am not sure it will help you but I once had this problem when trying to use a JVM that was too old.

The 5.0 version requires JDK1.6

You might also want to drop down to a "released" version of the JDE - like 4.5 or 4.7.

Note that the code generated by the 5.0 will only run on a 5.0 device, which is maybe 1% of the installed devices.

I am running JDK 1.6.

I don't mind code only running on OS 5.0 devices, because I'm basically trying to port my old J2ME AIM client over to a native BB application. Once I've done that, and gotten a feel for the system, I plan to move on to newer things. :)

That's fine, but be advised that there are many API's that are new on 5.0, and your code will most likely not be back-portable to the 30 million devices that are actually out there in folks pockets.

What I'm discovering, very quickly, is that while BB code is close enough to J2ME to make working with the platform pretty easy, I hate the JDE.

Loathe it.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem that I can use netbeans to (easily) develop BB native code.

Has anyone used J2ME code that's been put thru J2ME Polish? How does that 'feel' in terms of being close to native/not native?

I'll answer my own question.

It's pretty easy to set up J2ME Polish to produce blackberry apps. I'm producing .cod files right from netbeans, and as far as I can tell, the applications are pretty nice looking. :)

I was able to port my old AIM chat application over and get it running with minimal fuss. If I spent more than 3 hours on the effort, I'd be amazed. And if anyone wants to play with an old, antiquated AIM app, let me know.

Now, I'm off to do something useful with the platform. :)
