Default Blackberry DeviceInfo Class Issues

Please Login to Remove!

Hello,

I am new to BB development and finding some trouble with understanding the BB device classification and the Device Info API.

For Ex: BlackBerry Bold 8300. To get the device info I used some of the functions exposed by the Device INfo API

getDeviceName - returns me 8300.

getSoftwareVersion - returns 4.5.0.44

getPlatformVersion - returns a blank currently since am using a Simulator(Using Blackberry Eclipse Plugin for Dev)

I have the following questions and it would be great if any of you can throw some light on the following:

1. A sample value or What is the information returned by getPlatformVersion function. Since i dont have a BB device i am not able to see what data is returned by this call.

2. What is the Classification "Bold" or "Curve" is called? Is there any configuration like this and if so what is the API to get it??

3. Is there any device generation classification for BB similar to iPhone?? iPhones have 1G/2G/3G as device generation. Is there anything similar to this for BB??

4. getSoftwareVersion function is actually returning the OS version in the device ?? (OS - Blackberry v4.5.0.44) ?? or is this information means something else?

1. Platform version returns a version number, just like Software Version. In my experience, this value is irrelevant - I have found no use for it. My 9700 returns "5.1.0.91"

2. You get the model number, that's it. 83xx=Curve, 97xx=Bold, 95xx=Storm, etc.

3. Haven't seen this.

4. Yes, this is the OS level of the device.
