I have a problem with an app that my company is trying to develop to work on blackberries on a BES server.

The app sends data to a server using an external internet address. The external address actually goes to a server inside our LAN network. What seems to be happening, is the blackberry is connecting to the internet through our internal BES server (I didn't know they did that!) and so the BES server is trying to access our internal server using its external internet address.

Because our router doesn't support NAT loopback, its not able to connect and so does not send the data through. (the data is sent using a specific port, and I've set up a port forward on the router to make the connection go through to the correct server.)

Is there any way to get the blackberry app to connect directly to the internet without going through our BES server so that this will work?

There is, but it involves getting permission to use BIS-B or using direct TCP/IP (by appending ";deviceside=true" to the url) connection for your app. The normal way applications would be configured when a BES is available would be to connect to the server using the internal address. That way all your traffic is protected by the encrypted tunnel between the Blackberry and the BES. It also removes any issues that you might have with direct TCP.

My advice would be to configure your application to connect to the server using its internal IP address or internal DNS name.
