It means that the method was declared in a class but never called in that class.

It's a warning - ignore it. paint() is called by the GUI framework.

Ok. But my background color isn't changing, is there something else I need to be doing?

Depending of the object you are extending you may also need to override the definition of paintBackground(Graphics graphics)
